I had the same situation and managed to overcome it.
Symptoms:
- After Airpods got out of battery, it didn't reacted at all without any indication.
- When I connected it to charger, it indicated by amber blinking, but still didn't reacted to any of my actions (short-press to button, long-press)
The solution was to clean the lightning port with a needle (or something). Therefore, Airpods said to me that charging device detected, but they failed to charge properly.

So. Blinking orange means a couple of things. 1: The pair of AirPods keep factory resetting. So something can be logged in between the white button and the switch on the motherboard inside the AirPods case. 2: The device has a software or hardware issue. 3: The battery is super low that it’s in a constant charge phase. So, I gotten AirPods with this issue and fixed them. What you have to do is to remove them from your Apple Device. Then make sure your AirPods are inside the case. Connect a case to the walloutlet power source. Please use a official or official compatible apple cable. Then when the case is plugged in. Open the case then hold the button on the back of the case. You should see the case go from the orange from charging to white solid to blinking white. Keep holding. The case will blink white. Keep holding. The case then will show orange light. That means it’s soft factory resetting. Keep holding button. Then the case will go back to orange for charging to solid white then to blinking white. Hold the button still. Then once the light turns orange , let go of the button. Close the case and let it sit there for 10 minutes. After the 10 minute mark, open the case with your phone next to it. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on. The animation for pairing should appear. Connect the AirPods to your Apple device. After that, start using your AirPods. That should fix your issue.
