I got a suggestion from somewhere else and it worked.
Apparently this is a firmware issue and can be resolved by resetting the AirPods

I can confirm that this worked for me.
Answer from Diggory on Stack ExchangeHow has the Airpods 2 battery held up after 1.5 years? I have 1st gen Airpods and am pretty disappointed that after only a couple years the battery only lasts for about 40 minutes before it needs another charge. It honestly almost makes the product obsolete and useless if I plan on listening to something longer than that. I know Airpods 2 say they last 5 hours on one charge, how has that held up over time?

Hey guys, how AirPods 2 battery life, mine is brand new and went from 100 to 80 with in 1.5h with volume maybe 85% with noise cancellation on is this normal?
I’d appreciate JUST people’s experiences who used them actively, thank you.
Seriously thinking about getting them since I’m someone who loves music, even more in-ear tip earpods.
Only thing I’m worried is its longevity, it’s still +200 dollars so…
I am getting only a little more than 20 hours on my airpods pro 2. It's going to be 1 year now and I haven't changed any of the default settings. How much does your airpods give? Is my airpods in good condition or is it bad? Asking this since the advertised battery life is 30 hours and the warranty is going to expire.
I have the 1st generation, original AirPods that I've owned since their release (~3 years ago as of writing). The battery life for each AirPod has been steadily decreasing over time, down to about 1.5 hours of audio-only usage before needing a recharge in their case, which is frustratingly short.
Before throwing them away, I decided to try one last trick. I completely reset the AirPods case (holding down the white button on the back for 10+ seconds), and re-paired them with my iPhone. I then completely drained both AirPods down to zero, and the case itself down to zero through normal usage. Then, I put the dead AirPods into the dead case, and charged them both up to 100%.
This combination of reset/drain/recharge seems to have re-calibrated the battery life measurement system, and they no longer die at 1.5 hours. I'm now getting double that at around 3 - 3.5 hours, which is great for such an old pair. Hopefully this helps anybody experiencing this same thing. Try this battery recalibration!
edit - the AirPods are also draining "evenly" now! Before, one AirPod would drain faster than the other.
Hey everyone,
I'm experiencing an issue regarding my cases battery life. It's nowhere near 30hrs. For example: I listened to 1h 12 mins of music and my earpods lost about 20%. Adding that up, they should have a total battery life of 6hrs per charge, which is just about what's promised. However, when charging them inside the case, the case loses like 14-16% of battery. Adding all of this up, i'm getting nowhere near 30hrs, maybe 15 at best. Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this? So far I've tried unpairing, disabling and re-enabling "find my" and I've made sure my AirPods are on the latest firmware. The only thing i haven't tried yet is using everything up to 0% and then charge them again. I'm kinda clueless here and I wanna try everything before sending them in as a replacement. I've already talked to an Apple Support employee and he also told me to send them in if nothing else works. Does anyone maybe have a different Idea?
