Give that Lightning port a deep clean. Lint and gunk love to hide in there and mess with the connection. A wooden toothpick usually does the trick. Reset those little buggers. Hold the button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber, then white. This can clear up any software glitches. If you've got AppleCare+, take advantage of the Express Replacement Service. They'll ship you a new case pronto. As a last resort, you might need to spring for a replacement case from Apple or a third-party seller. It sucks, I know, but sometimes that's the only option left.

I'm having similar issues. I plugged my case in to charge (with the AirPods in the case) and checked it a couple hours later. The light on the case does not turn on at all, nothing happens when I press + hold the reset button, and the AirPods themselves are now not functioning (or maybe out of battery) too. I went through the paces with Apple Support online and they said it sounds like I'll need to replace the case, for $89.
I purchased them brand new from Apple in January 2020. In June 2020, they were replaced by apple because of a static sound when using them. Now in February they are not working or charging at all. $249 and 13 months of use with 2 issues, and now a useless set of headphones. Yay
