Had a similar problem with some cable wonkiness on both mine and my daughters AirPods. I had a Apple certified cable, in fact it came with our iphoneX which I had been using for months to charge everything lighting (phone, ipad, AirPods) without issue. One day, noticed my AirPods case wasn’t charging. Same cable still charged my iPhone and iPad without issue. I tried an aftermarket certified cable and the AirPods case started charging without problems.
So, Apple cable didn’t work only with AirPods case. Aftermarket case worked with everything.
I opened a case with Apple for both airpod cases and Apple replaced both cases. Still had the issue so may had been a cable issue but I said screw it and just took my new AirPod cases and moved on with life using just a different cable.
Point of story, I think there are some strange issues with AirPod cases charging.
