Give that Lightning port a deep clean. Lint and gunk love to hide in there and mess with the connection. A wooden toothpick usually does the trick. Reset those little buggers. Hold the button on the back of the case for 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber, then white. This can clear up any software glitches. If you've got AppleCare+, take advantage of the Express Replacement Service. They'll ship you a new case pronto. As a last resort, you might need to spring for a replacement case from Apple or a third-party seller. It sucks, I know, but sometimes that's the only option left.

But if they don’t charge if u plug them in, they’re dead get a new pair ... This isn’t true. The MagSafe charger is just a normal Qi charger with magnets. Will charge anything Qi. ... A MagSafe compatible case was also released mid cycle for the Gen 1.

There may be a problem with your Airpods case then, and it probably can’t retain any charge, so, it only works when it is plugged in, when the energy is going purely into charging the airpods rather than charging the case.
