r/Reaper on Reddit: Using Akai Mpk mini mk3 with reaper
January 11, 2024 -

I am completely new to DAW and Reaper and have been following videos by Kenny Gioia. I have started getting used to the Reaper ecosystem and decided to buy a Midi controller hoping that would allow me more freedom. The keyboard however comes with its own software called (MPCBeats) and now I am unable to figure this out at all. I am stuck between going through tutorials of MPCBeats and videos by Kenny and am slowly loosing interest in all this. This buy was a long term wait and I had to save up slowly keeping family priorities in check. I just want to make quick and easy beats. Program the midi controller in reaper with the right plugins to start layering my guitar over a simple drum beat.

Where should I start? I would need community help with videos detailing how to program AKAI MPK mini MK3 with reaper.

I would need community help with getting the right plugins for drums/guitar and as I am a beginner I would like to go with a freeware and maybe in 2 months upgrade to a decent plugin once I feel I have what it takes to play with them.

I would also need community help in understanding how exactly do these pulgins/vst work. I did do some wiki on this but other than jargons everything seems gibberish to me.

I am really sorry but I would honestly appreciate if an expert could dumb it down for me to make a bird's eye view sense of the situation.

I am aware that I ask too much. I just would like to get ahead of this blocker as these melodies and beats that keep popping in my head are getting lost and it is saddening to see them go.

For those who do reply, I really appreciate your patience and you are a 💎!

First off, you do not need MPCBeats, so set it off to the side for the time being. The Akai MPC Mini is an excellent little device. When you plug it into a USB port and start up Reaper, the first thing is to go to Reaper Preferences, look at MIDI devices, and make sure it shows up there. If not, it's an ASIO driver problem. Once it does show up, create a project, add a track, configure the track to listen to all midi channels, and record overdub, arm the track for recording, and turn on track monitoring (the little speaker looking thing next to the track arm button). If you tap keys on the MPK you should see yellow dots in the track's meter. Add a VST instrument like ReaSynth, and you should hear sounds when you play the keyboard or the pads. If you want to play drum sounds, create a new track and add the free Version of Sitala VST. Sitala's free version is still available if you scroll to the bottom of their download site. Disarm the first track and arm this one, and turn on track monitoring. By default the MPK pads send midi notes staring at 36 on up, which will match Sitala. The knobs on the MPK Mini can do anything, but until you configure them using ReaLearn they do nothing. ReaLearn is a whole 'nother bag of cats. And you don't really need the knobs until you're comfortable with the stuff we just talked about. Here's a short video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD5wvEmKEB8

Also, there is a steep learning curve to the DAW as it is. I personally found it easier than a few others to get me started doing exactly what you are. But with time and persistence, you will learn it very well and you will be so glad you stuck it out! Reaper is DEEP. Join the Reaper User Group on Facebook too.
