I have two auxiliary bathrooms bathrooms with standard 30x60x30 all in one fiberglass tub/shower enclosures. Both were installed with the house when it was built in 92 and are worn, yellowing, and the walls are a bit short for my taste. I'd like to replace both, but I do not have any experience doing my own tile work and am doubtful my first learning attempt will yield a positive result.
I've been looking into panel systems like Utile Maax, Kohler Choreograph, etc but it is hard to find good information about the quality of the product, actual install difficulty, and looks.
What products have you used in the past that you are pleased or displeased with? I'd rather spend more for a good system with the caveat being I need to be able to do the installation myself as I don't have the budget for hiring out the work.
I've been searching all the big stores (Lowe's, HD, Menards) for a new alcove shower kit, but I'm having trouble finding anything that fits this particular spot. The opening is 46.5" wide and max of 35.75" deep (current unit is 33.75" deep measuring to the back drywall), but seems like all the kits are 48" or 42" width.
This unit was originally like a dark olive green (assuming original, built in the 70s I believe), but the previous owners painted it white about 15 years ago. Well that paint is starting to chip and frankly I didn't really care for the layout anyway, so I figured I'd start pricing out a replacement that has a configuration more to my liking. So far, nobody seems to have anything that will fit.
Am I doomed to a custom solution or am I missing some obvious-to-everyone-else bit of info, like maybe these kits are adjustable/customizable (maybe 48" actually fits 45"–48" alcoves)? Or they can be recessed into one or the other walls?
I'm reasonably handy, but haven't done much bathroom work. Thanks in advance for any tips or leads.
