You could try having a shower pan made and set by a plumber and then put in your own tile surround. There are videos on how to do tile. I have done 4 tile showers and on the first one I had no tile experience at all and it turned out good. There are options for custom pans. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh3yFtfFbwA Answer from inkseep1 on reddit.com

Alcove Shower/Bath Panel Systems
Hi, I've been a renovations contractor for over 10 years and while I've never installed the Utile system by Maxx, about a year ago we had a client who was very interested so I did do a lot of research into it. From what I've read and watched it seems to be a good solid system that was designed for the DIY market. The install looked to be very straightforward and fairly simple for someone who is even moderately handy. Had our client decided to go that route I would have been confident installing it. I have not looked into the Kohler system at all. Regardless of which system you choose, the most important thing is to make sure to be meticulous in following the manufacturer's directions. This may seem obvious but read through the entire manual before you start working. Watch as many YouTube videos as you can find until you're confident you can pull it off. You'd be surprised how many people just dive in and try and figure it out as they go. That's a recipe for frustration. Something else to consider (depending on where you are) is something like a BathFitters system. This is a company that comes in and installs an acrylic tub and surround directly over what is already existing. No demo, and it's done in a day. I've had jobs where the client has hired our local BathFitters franchise directly and process seemed easy and cost-effective for them (I've never hired BathFitters myself but they've been on my sites a couple times). Hope this helps! More on reddit.com

Help! Appollo Lauren Alcove Shower Kit
I don't have direct experience, so looked up the reviews on the Costco site: Technical issues: Customer service 1-888-232-2845 [email protected] Review 1 (From Google translate) Anchoring the side walls with the back wall poses a problem since the fiberglass is not perfectly straight. The screws that are already in place do not provide adequate strength and we had to replace them with nuts using clamps to maintain the desired alignment. The protrusion in the bottom of the back wall provides good support for someone with a disability but this leaves gaps on either side which will be a problem for future maintenance Review 2 Make sure you have enough room to install! The shower is beautiful when finished… instructions are a little complicated, but if you follow them carefully you’re fine. Only issue was putting the walls together, if you order make sure you have enough room to put together outside the shower then move into place after, as it’s I’m possible to do it inside. Review 3 The shower is 60"x32", not 60"x30" as indicated. The one piece we took out of the box before realizing this was scratched. Review 4 · 7 months ago Terrible finish on the 3 walls have scratches received shower kit, and all the walls has scratches and wavey deformed wall kit. Costco Response: Thank you for the feedback. At A&E Bath and Shower, we pride ourselves on the quality of our product and we sincerely apologize if the item received was damaged or deformed during shipment. For assistance with your A&E product, please contact [email protected] or call 1-888-232-2845 and an agent will be glad to help and resolve your aftersales issue in a timely manner. I did find what I believe to be the manufacturer in China, but they don't feature that product on their website. They do mention that they make non standard items however. More on reddit.com

In general, are shower kits considered "cheap" or "tacky" or low-quality?
I would suggest going to a big box store and looking at the kits sold there. If you’re in the Midwest menards has a lot on display. In my opinion some of the most expensive kits look OK. Nicer than a white acrylics insert but not as nice as tile. More on reddit.com

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Alcove Shower/Bath Panel Systems
January 2, 2021 -

I have two auxiliary bathrooms bathrooms with standard 30x60x30 all in one fiberglass tub/shower enclosures. Both were installed with the house when it was built in 92 and are worn, yellowing, and the walls are a bit short for my taste. I'd like to replace both, but I do not have any experience doing my own tile work and am doubtful my first learning attempt will yield a positive result.

I've been looking into panel systems like Utile Maax, Kohler Choreograph, etc but it is hard to find good information about the quality of the product, actual install difficulty, and looks.

What products have you used in the past that you are pleased or displeased with? I'd rather spend more for a good system with the caveat being I need to be able to do the installation myself as I don't have the budget for hiring out the work.

I am interested in this as well. We had it in our previous home and liked the fact that there were no grout lines to maintain. I did find this blog post a while ago that I thought was useful: https://blog.innovatebuildingsolutions.com/2015/06/20/5-tells-shower-tub-wall-panels/

r/DIY on Reddit: Am I the only sucker with a 46.5" alcove?
April 23, 2024 -

I've been searching all the big stores (Lowe's, HD, Menards) for a new alcove shower kit, but I'm having trouble finding anything that fits this particular spot. The opening is 46.5" wide and max of 35.75" deep (current unit is 33.75" deep measuring to the back drywall), but seems like all the kits are 48" or 42" width.

This unit was originally like a dark olive green (assuming original, built in the 70s I believe), but the previous owners painted it white about 15 years ago. Well that paint is starting to chip and frankly I didn't really care for the layout anyway, so I figured I'd start pricing out a replacement that has a configuration more to my liking. So far, nobody seems to have anything that will fit.

Am I doomed to a custom solution or am I missing some obvious-to-everyone-else bit of info, like maybe these kits are adjustable/customizable (maybe 48" actually fits 45"–48" alcoves)? Or they can be recessed into one or the other walls?

I'm reasonably handy, but haven't done much bathroom work. Thanks in advance for any tips or leads.
