r/Alienware on Reddit: 15 R3 “boot failure on device”
February 29, 2024 -

I just bought this laptop refurbished and every time I try to turn it on, I’m met with the “boot failure on device” I’ve tried a bunch of things I saw online and I noticed one thing. When I look at the boot option priorities, the hard drive isn’t an option. The two that are there are pictured. I ran a test on everything and there were no problems. So I think this could be it, any advice on what I can do? For right now I reset everything to the default settings so I can start fresh if I get any other advice. This is my first laptop like this so I have no idea what to do.

r/Alienware on Reddit: Alienware x17 R2 Boot failure
May 21, 2022 -

Hi,

I just got my Alienware x17 R2 laptop yesterday.

Today, when I turned it on for the first time, I got this error:

“ No bootable devices were found! Possible causes could be a corrupt OS image or a boot device is not enabled in BIOS setup.” and I only had this option to shut down the device. The next time I turned it on I got this error " Boot failure on device".

I have not changed any boot mode configuration. The UEFI option is on "Windows boot manager" by default.

I think they have not installed any windows on this Laptop in factory.

I would be thankful if anyone here can guide me what is the problem and what should I do now?

r/Windows10 on Reddit: Alienware m17 r4 - critical error - boot failure on device
March 29, 2021 -

Tried to install a second ssd on my gaming laptop, was told to configure new raid volume in bios, now I'm stuck in a "support assist performance check" loop with a critical error stating something about "boot failure on device". The only potential fixes I see when I google it is to try legacy boot ROM (which I don't even have an option for in my bios), or to factory reset from the bios (which I also don't have an option for). When I do the thorough test inside support assist, it tells me everything is absolutely fine and there's no issues.

What can I do here? I removed the new ssd and left the original in slot 1, but I can't get past the critical error screen other than to go into bios or boot options, which also is no help.

Any help would be great appreciated!

got an R4 for cheap on ebay after getting my r5 replacement (figured id use this one to travel with) was working fine, went to start it up today and it says boot failure on device. Ive tried the OS recovery in bios - said everything was fine and still got red screen, then no media present error. I treid turning off secure boot and turning it back and now it just goes into the support assist screen boot failure on device. I think i just need to get a new SSD or wipe this one and reload everything onto but is there a way to boot from my r5 and do a factory reset on the r4?

What do I need to do to fix this?

I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to computer stuff outside of googling and watching a YouTube video or two and following someone else's instruction.

I hit F12 and ran a 3hr and 40 min checkup and it said everything was normal, if that information helps at all.

I've been booting in safe mode as well. On dell it said to make sure I was booting the right way but gave no instruction on how to do that, ironically. Or I'm just absolutely blind and this is an easy fix...

Any help would be much appreciated.

Annnddd if there's any suggestions on how to improve my laptop that would also be great!

Also not sure if this helps either:

Intel Core i5-7300 @ 2.50GHz, I have the cruddy Kabylake (I know I'm sorry I'm new to this) Nvidia GFX

Uhh.... Under boot list option (F2) its on UEFI with Legacy option disabled and, again, secure boot enabled. Boot option #1 says windows boot manager still so.. Maybe just windows issue?

Sorry again ; ~ ;

October 8, 2020 - Do you have an SSD in there somewhere too? if so the bios isn't seeing it which would explain the boot failure on device message. Id honestly (if your comfortable) remove any hard drive and blow out any dust or debris with compressed air.

r/Alienware on Reddit: How do I get past these startup screens and boot?
December 29, 2023 -

I have had an Alienware aurora r10 with everything but the cpu, gpu, and hard drive for two years, but I just got both the cpu, gpu, and an 8tb 3.5 inch hard drive. When I plugged it in and connected it to my monitor, the “pre-boot system performance check” screen would say warning message boot failure on device. I used the qr code and it said nothing was wrong. Anyways when I press continue it goes to a setup screen, and here is where the real trouble is. I don’t know what to do from here. If I press save and exit, it goes to the same white pre-boot screen as before. When I press back it also goes back to that same screen (obviously). When I press exit and it gives me five options in the order “Save Changes and Reset”, “Discard Changes and Reset”, “Restore Defaults”, “Discard Changes”, and “Save Changes”. The first two options go back to that same white pre-boot screen, and the third other options do nothing really. That last orange button in the top left also goes back to the white screen. I am very new to tech like this and am stuck in a loop. Does anyone know what I need to do from here to load up windows and start gaming? I will include pictures in this post, also I blurred the qr code cause mods took the post down for containing it.

Question - "Boot Failure on Device" ? | Tom's Hardware Forum
June 21, 2022 - After a sudden blue screen, my Alienware 13 R3 on Windows 10 is not able to boot. It says "detecting media presence" then "no media present". Then it goes to Support Assist page showing "Boot Failure on Device" I tried restarting the PC by clicking F2 and came up with the BIOS menu as below...

r/Alienware - Boot Failure On Device - Aurora R6
August 3, 2017 -

I did a search for this issue, but it didn't seem to come up. It's been disappointing that it's persisting, and it looks like I'm either returning it or asking for a replacement.

I bought a certified refurbished Aurora R6 off the Dell website. It came with 256gb nvme m.2 and a 1tb HDD. When I received the machine, the OS was installed on the HDD. I contacted Alienware support for help transferring the OS from the HDD to the SSD, and they were able to do so after deleting all the partitions, changing a bunch of settings in the bios, and reinstalling windows 10 onto the ssd.

Now, I thought everything was good, but nope. Windows had to reboot for updates about a day after I migrated the OS. On startup, it started saying "Boot failure on device. Press any key to reboot the machine." Naturally, I called Alienware support again, this time, they told me after many other techniques that failed, to do a system restore. This worked for two reboots, and I was able to get back into windows, albeit at the cost of all of my data.

But like I said, within two reboots, it was back to the boot failure issue. The tech told me to restore it again, as the windows update was corrupting the boot. I did as he said... And after two reboots, back to the same issue. He then told me to do it again, this time putting him through to Dell connect, and I complied.

He started doing a "clear and reset store cache" using the Dell click 2 fix program, telling me that this would fix the drive. But what does the windows store have anything to do with boot issues? He then ended the call and connect, telling me to reply to his email when it was done.

Unfortunately, windows update struck again and rebooted the system. It is now back to Boot failure. I'm seriously done with this. I don't know why my machine came with windows installed on the HDD, and now it doesn't work on the SSD.

AT what point is a replacement in order? I paid good money for this machine, and I expect a working version of it. I hope Alienware takes pride in their product, but at this point, it's just been a huge disappointment.

March 6, 2024 -

So, recently i have been getting an issue i have never experienced before.

On start up i check a black screen with text saying no media pressence, checking for media.
Start PXE over ipv4...

And it just lingers there for ever. Looking up some guides for my computer illiteracy and i found guides to change the boot order, and so i did. I main boot option 1 the windows boot system. Option 2 is the ipv4. And option 3 is the ipv6. The boot now makes it to the alien ware logo, and after it loads it just black screens for ever now...

Currently through the F12 option i am running a pre boot system performance check through the diagnostic option.

Any other tips of what the F to do? Never had an issue today and would rather not bring it anywhere and oay for a service if i can do this myself.

The unit itself is an Arora R12 if that matters at all. Cheers in advance for any advice. Thanks!

Broken Aurora R13, CPU fan detect failure error. Turning itself on and off within seconds.

Does anyone know what might be causing this in the video? My Aurora 13 stopped working after a sudden loud fan followed by a crash. After restarting, the PC showed CPU fan detect failure and woudn't operate more than 5 mins even if I booted into windows. At the same time, whenever I crashed from windows, sometimes it would be able to boot into windows but other times it will show no screen and go into a state of turning itself on and off within seconds like in the video.

I have the Alienware stock 120mm AIO for CPU cooling. Should I start with replacing this component? Perhaps even upgrade it into a 240mm AIO? I really cannot pin point the problem here. It seems like it can be issues with the motherboard or CPU as well.

Also, I had upgraded my GPU from the stock 3070 to a 4070ti. I've seen other pair this combo and I confirmed with my local parts shop that this step up should work fine with my machine. The 4070ti worked perfectly out of the box for about two months until I started working on rendering and editing video for my job on this machine. Before when the usage was only playing games, I had never experience overheating or crash with the 4070ti. In fact, during the rendering session, the PC never showed overheating warning or loud fan noise before the sudden crash.

The specs for my machine are CPU: Intel i7-12700F, 750W stock PSU, 120mm stock AIO CPU cooling + 3 stock fans, 16GB of rams and 1 TB SSD.

This is my first gaming PC and this really caught me off guard. Since I wanted to do more upgrade in the future like the 240mm AIO, I am not sure if I should get Best Buy or Dell to look at this problem? Or is there something I can do before hand.

Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated, Thank you all!

Contact Dell Support. Tell them what's happened. They'll tell you what the best approach is. It's worth remembering that if your warranty is still valid, you'll get parts replacements for free, but only on parts they originally supplied to you. So you may have to put your 3070 back in and prove it has the same issues with that, and if you send it away for repair, you'll definitely want to otherwise there's a good chance your 4070Ti will come back to you as a 3070 again.

Just to confirm, 12700F, not 12700KF, that will change things a little and not in a good way. The R13 has some rather nasty fundamental flaws, none that AW will explicitly admit to. The best you will get is a technical use of the term "up to" and a not legally admissible admission of guilt. So some amount of reading between the lines will be necessary. Its probably not the new GPU. Yes the nvidia cards have wonky power draws, but that is mostly the 80 and 90 cards. Also that should be outright tripping the PSU protection, not looping. Its a maybe but its near the bottom of the list. The R13 has thermal problems (sort of not applicable to the 12700F, its only a 65W base chip), boost problems (Intel spec for 12gen and later K chips is unlimited boost, AW boosts for 56 seconds, forever >>> 56 secoends. But your not using a K chip), and power problems (the board can only sustain 160-180W to the CPU). But that is all pointing to power/VRM issues. And the mental gymnastics I have seen some people pull off to say "R13 is fine" would put Olympic class gymnastics teams to shame. >> until I started working on rendering and editing video for my job on this machine I think this is the key. Gaming tends to only be ~30-40% load unless your running on low end chips and is how no one seems to have issues but a system will choke on benchmarks. You really can't have too much cooling unless you go sub ambient but at the same time a 65W* chip should be fine under a single fan cooler. Going to a 240mm isn't going to hurt but it is not likely to fix the issue. I also don't think its the CPU itself. Between the records of Intel (11th gen was a flop) and Dell (faster to list the systems that don't have massive issues: this space intentionally left blank), I'm going to say its an issue with the MB. Specifically the VRMs: R15 with 13th gen has 50% more VRM capacity than the R13 with 12th gen. Max power draw for 13th gen is 5% higher than 12th gen. You don't go adding 50% capacity to cover a 5% increase unless your original system was under spec. You don't go limiting power to 180W for a 240+W chip unless you know running at 240W is going to burn out the VRMs with a MTBF inside the warranty period (aka they have to replace like half the systems under normal warranty) Dell is probably going to be useless in terms of a long term fix: if the design is flawed and the system is preforming to spec... The 'tests' that they run are at best outdated: if the system didn't crash, system is fine. If system crashed, test not finished, retest. And Best buy is going to be even worse. If you still under the original warranty you should be able to get replacement parts. But I would start saving up some cash: the R13 MB is proprietary. As is the PSU and case. Your looking at $400-500 if you need to swap any of that. To diagnose the issue: start with a benchmark ( https://www.maxon.net/en/downloads/cinebench-r23-downloads ). Let that run for 10 minutes and keep an eye on power and thermals ( https://www.hwinfo.com/download/ ). That will both stress the system (and should find any VRM issues) as well as giving you something you can compare to other systems. If the system is tripping a thermal shutdown the thermals should spike. You can run a CPU with really sloppy cooling (no paste, loose cooler, etc) and 5 minutes idle is about the time it takes to saturate a liquid loop. If the system is tripping a power shutdown the temps will look *normal* but just loose power. Probably a faulty VRM but your going to need at minimum a MB swap (oh joy this is a full disassembly and rebuild). If you want to swap out for a 240mm you can pop the front shell off, there should be mounting holes for a 240mm. You will probably have to pull some other plastic bits off to route the tubes, but it is doable. One last thing to check, but its not going to be the cause of the boot issues, the PSU. Dell has good PSUs but they are split out so you can't get the full capacity out: 500 vs 250+250. Both have the same capacity but if you need 350+75, well one of those isn't going to work.

June 21, 2019 - Alienware 15 R4 : Intel core i7-8750h CPU 2.20 ghz 2200 Mhz Nvidia GFX Seagate Firecuda 1Tb HDD Bios version 1.1.6 Hai fam , my Alienware 15 R4 suddenly doesn't want to boot , completely out of nowhere!! It starts up checking for media presence but then goes on to say" boot failure on device" Here's what I've tried I've switched SATA operation from raid to ahci , tried legacy boot as well as secure boot with Uefi , switched around the boot order, nothing works , under the main menu in the BIOS , the hard drive is listed so I know it's not dead , plus I've reseated the hard drive twice now.
