High impact plants for a full sun area.
The elephant ears I strongly second and will be an annual in 5b (you can bring inside or just store the corms). Wasn't sure if you needed full sun or shade recommendations. I am also in 5b. If full sun, for perennials I have black-eyed susans/other rudbeckia like chocolate cherry. Also big leaf hydrangea, coneflowers, shasta daisies, tall garden phlox, hardy hibiscus (tropical looking but hardy), hollyhocks, peonies, liatris, lilies (fav is forever susans). Colorful annuals I always plant are variegated new guinea impatiens, african daisies, lantana, petunias, zinnias, marigolds, cosmos, nasturtiums, canna lilies. The cannas I bring inside for the winter and they keep flowering! The zinnias and cosmos you can grow from seed directly outdoors. If you need shade plants, then for perennials I have ferns, hosta, heuchera in funky colors, cardinal flowers (beautiful red tall flowers), woodland phlox, violas. The annuals are a lot of colorful fun here including rieger begonias, coleus, caladiums, polka dots and persian shield -- all these you can bring them in for the winter so you can actually have them multiple seasons. The persian shield and coleus are incredibly easy to propagate from leaf cuttings into additional plants. One coleus I kept over winter is now becoming 5 plants. More on reddit.com

What kind of plants do well outdoors with direct sunlight?
Cactus and succulents will take a lot. Even then, you have to make sure you buy ones that say they take full sun. They can still burn and die despite this because there’s sun, then there’s Sacramento sun. Other options are some California natives. Some are pretty hardy in direct sun but like mentioned can die, because well, Sacramento. More on reddit.com

r/houseplants on Reddit: What are your favorite patio / full-sun plants in your collection?
June 19, 2024 -

After living in a city for 8 years with no patio or outdoor space of my own - I’ve moved to a larger space that has a beautiful, small patio. Exploring a whole new world of plants that I can leave outdoors for the summer has been so much fun. A lot of my indoor plants have moved outside full time for the summer (bird of paradise, succulents, wandering dude) but this has also allowed me to unlock a whole new genre of plants and blooms that I previously never any reason to buy or think about. Some of my new patio plants are my new favorites in my collection.

My current favorite is my Moss Rose (also know as the 10 AM plant which is when it’s peak bloom daily) - it puts out fresh blooms every day and has these really cool Dr Seuss succulent looking stems.
