I see so many posts about how all-in-one units take forever, clothes are still damp afterwards, etc. etc. But some of these posts are years old and I know that tech can change very quickly.
I live in an apartment and my budget is around $2k, and I'm looking for a good unit (we are 2 adults, 1 baby). I'm leaning towards stacked because of what I've heard, but I honestly would like to get an all-in-one simply to save space. It would be great to put some shelves above it, or better yet, raise it 18" off the ground and put my cat's liter box under it (someone else did this and says it worked well).
I'm torn- any advice or insights?
Thanks!

Hello all!
My washer and dryer are now about 10 years old and it’s time to replace them. I’m weighing out my options and I’m considering getting a tower that is both a washer and dryer so I have a little more space, or a side-by-side washer and dryer. Are there any advantages to one over the other? I’m not looking for anything fancy just something that’s reliable and has been rated well.
Any advice would be appreciated as I’m out of the loop on this stuff at the moment
One issue I can see, is that in 35 years I've bought three washers and one electric dryer. If you are referencing to is attached stacked units you may be replacing a working dryer because it is attached to the broken washer. The dryers have so few moving parts they are easily and inexpensively repaired. The same can't be said for washers.
The combo is only useful if you have a very small space and cannot afford to have separate units taking up extra space. They will have lower capacities and not perform as well as standalone units. Another issue is that with separate units, if your washer breaks, you can simply buy a new washer and keep the existing dryer. With a combo unit you would need to replace both in that case.
Currently have 23 year old side by side units. It's a small laundry room and additional space would be nice. The current washer is also only 3.7sq ft and it looks like 4.5sq ft is pretty standard for stackable, so regardless, it would be an upgraded capacity for us.
Everything I've read recommends side-by-side if you have the space which we technically do, but I wasn't sure if the little bit of 0.5 sq ft of extra capacity and easier maintenance was worth it, or if there are other differences to consider (noise, ergonomics, efficiency and other specs, etc).
What would be the recommended option for stackable v. side-by-side?
