ELI5: Can you explains what alternate reality games (arg) are and how they work?
An alternate reality game is a type of game that takes place over multiple forms of media and interweaves itself with the real world. For example an ARG might start with a video game which gives you clues to point to a website, which gives you an image which is hiding a phone number to call, which gives you GPS coordinates to visit a location where a box is buried, that gives you a code to input in the video game to unlock a secret ending. The key differences between an ARG and other types of game are the use of multiple media (software, websites, phone numbers, audio/video/image files, real-world locations etc), uses puzzles solved by the players to advance the plot, the fact that the players are active participants in the game world, and also that the game is overseen in real time by real people - some ARGs might even hire actors to portray in-game characters. Contrary to the other answers, an ARG is not the same thing as a video game which merely overlays game elements onto the real world using Augmented Reality (AR, as opposed to Virtual Reality (VR)). So games like Pokemon Go are not ARGs. More on reddit.com

My ARG (Alternate Reality Game) Chart!
I actually visited omega mart in nevada and it was crazy. It's more than a strangely sarcastic supermarket, it's a work of art. Sometimes the lights flicker and it says "Dramcorp is lying to you blah blah blah persuasion stuff" and others there can be a freezer that leads to a room with an alien bible-ish thing More on reddit.com

i don't know a subreddit for that, but I do know a website that could help. It's made by the Youtuber Night Mind who's known for explaining ARGs. He made a website that people submitted ARGs for people to discover new ARGs so I think that's what you're looking for! https://www.nightmind.info/index Also people submit ARGs to his subreddit r/NightMind so that could also be useful. I hope this helped! More on reddit.com

But while most actual play games rely on a combination of vivid descriptions or miniature battle sets to immerse players in the story, Tales From Woodcreek took its players on location to Ontario’s Village at Black Creek transforming an entire historical village into the game’s haunted play area. The resulting production turned into something of an immersive sampler: a tabletop adventure at its core, but drawing on everything from immersive theater and Larp to escape rooms. Tales From Woodcreek is looking to return for a second season, and the show seems to be adding an alternate reality game to the immersive sampler.
