March 9, 2016 - My spouse, though—who teaches college-level English Composition and who also edits—corrects all instances of “grey.” I mean absolutely no offense/offence to our good friends in the UK and UK-influenced locales, for whom the e-spelling is correct. ... Another UK/US difference – we’d say axe & calibre; though I’m interested to note that glamour appears to be favoured over glamor; I’d have expected the other. Melissa: Inclusion of a word in a dictionary represents acknowledgment of existence, not endorsement of use.

1 week ago - Some verbs take only -s- worldwide, though in many cases -z- was once an acceptable alternative: advertise, advise, arise, circumcise, comprise, compromise, demise, despise, devise, disguise, excise, exercise, franchise, guise, improvise, incise, promise, reprise, revise, rise, surmise, surprise, televise, and wise. (In a few of these, -ise is not a suffix, while some have an -ise suffix with a different etymology, and the rest derive from -ίζειν.) Some words spelled with -ize in American English are not used in British English.

April 18, 2010 - I'd say it probably doesn't exist, since Arabic is pretty much completely phonetic. There's only really one way to spell something. English on the other hand is only partially phonetic, so there's many different ways to spell each word. Click to expand... I agree it's rare in Arabic, but not just because of phonetics.

r/NYTSpellingBee on Reddit: An Incomplete List of Accepted Alternative Spellings
July 27, 2021 -

LIKABLE/LIKEABLE annoyed the hell out of me yesterday. Most alternate spellings aren't allowed, for example British spellings (most of the time). But as always with Spelling Bee, there are exceptions, and exceptions to the exceptions. So I put together a list of alternate spellings I've encountered in the year and a half I've been playing this game, and am sharing it in case others are interested.

They're arranged in order by vowels included in the word. Where the spelling change involves different vowels, I'm listing it under the simpler of the two choices. Or if that's not applicable, under the one that comes first alphabetically.
