For how long will am4 be considered modern?
It's not a "probably" on ram. AM5 will need new RAM. It depends how much you want to spend, and If what CPU you're throwing money at to keep it running. If you're on a budget and you have a 5600x I'd probably just replace the board and carry on. If you can afford the upgrade, and you're currently sitting on like a 2600x, I'd probably just start over on AM5. More on reddit.com
Is there a complete wiki/infographic guide to choosing an AMD cpu?
If you want something to explain the desktop: first number = gen. 1-5 is AM4, >7 is AM5 Eg: 5xxx is zen 3 and on AM4, 7xxx is zen 4 and on AM5 (Exceptions: 4xxx is garbage, 6xxx has been skipped, 8xxx are just laptop zen 4 CPUs with decent IGPU’s for too much money) I wouldn’t go anything lower than ryzen 3000. If possible, I would get AM5 for the platform longevity. I would also wait till August 15th for ryzen 8000 to at least drop prices on older CPU’s. Second number = tier. Typically means more cores or faster per cores Eg. 76xx has 6 cores, 77xx has 8 cores. For gaming, go for x6xx if you are more on a budget(we will get into the best gaming CPUs later). For productivity, go for the biggest number possible for moar cores. Third and forth numbers: fluff numbers Time for letters: X = slightly more expensive and slightly faster versions of the normal versions. Also, may not include the loud stock cooler. Also sometimes the only options G = has a decent IGPU. Are just reheated laptop GPU’s and slower than desktop CPUs(5600g is much slower than 5600(x)) Exception: Ryzen 7000+(excluding ones with and F designation) have some shitty IGPUS good enough to turn on the system and do debugging. X3D = has more cache. You don’t need to know what that means, all you need to know is that is provides basically next gen gaming performance at the cost of some productivity losses.(5800x3d ~ 7700(x)) Exception: 7800x3d has 8 3d vcache cores(8 gaming cores). 7900x3d has 6 3d vcache cores(6 gaming cores) and 6 normal(productivity cores)cores. 7950x3d has 8 3d vcache cores, and 8 normal cores. Tldr: Super budget: 3600(x) Budget: 5600(x), 5600g if you don’t have a gpu Mid range: 7500f(only on aliexpress), 7600(x), 7700(x) High end: 7800x3d(gaming), 7950x(productivity), 7950x3d(best of both worlds) Hopes this mess helps you. If you have any questions, ask away! I would also go ask for help on r/buildapcforme More on reddit.com

I think 4th is the last gen, but Im honestly waiting. My 1700 is at 3.7 and don't really need an upgrade because my machine handles everything great. Coming from an old 8350 I think I'm just used to the wait though.

Despite being just a humble CPU socket, AMD 'boldly suggests' AM4 has 'legendary status' | PC Gamer
May 10, 2024 - In September 2016, AMD released a slew of new CPU models for OEM partners, such as the basic A6-9500. New chips often require a new socket but in previous years, AMD often had several in the market, all at the same time (e.g. AM1, FM2+, AM3+). Replacing all of those was AM4—a square socket, 40x40 mm, home to 1331 contact pins. The idea was to have one socket for all desktop processors and not just for the first generation of chips, but for many more to come.

As we all know, as an example, ddr3 is considered old and ancient by now, and most likely, in the next 5 years ddr4 will be considered outdated, but my question is, for how long will am4 be considered modern? The thing is, my am4 mobo broke and I'm left with 2 choices - use this chance to upgrade to am5 and buy a whole new CPU and probably new ram, or stay on am4, and when the time comes, upgrade to am5. What do you think?

I would argue that AM4 isn't modern even today. It's a platform launched in 2016, using DDR4 that we've had since 2014. But it all depends on how you define "modern". But more concretely, consider this: Ryzen 5800X3D is the very best you can get on AM4. It is roughly equivalent to a Ryzen 7600 on AM5, not entry-level, but a cheaper model. That will likely still be competitive for another gen or maybe two. If you have something like a 5600X or lower it is already now falling behind, though not by much so it's still a valid budget option. It all depends on how much performance you need/want. The cheapest option is obviously to get a new budget B550 motherboard, but if you were considering upgrading to an X3D CPU you might as well go AM5
