The difference is that EC2 is located in a secure data center with very fast Internet. If your EC2 type is a dedicated host, the machine that sits inside the data center is a real physical machine. If it's an instance, it's a "fake" machine inside a physical machine. Elastic Beanstalk is just a GUI for CloudFormation, a tool for automating the setup of EC2 and other AWS services. I required to build C library , but it was very hard to configure in MacOS. You absolutely do not need a cloud computing service for the sake of compiling a C binary on macOS. Just use gcc and specify the target architecture when compiling if you need to compile for something other than the machine (i.e. your Mac) that you’re compiling on. More on reddit.com

Hey guys so I would like to get into deeper development in regards to backend and I'm looking at EC2.
So I'm used to Heroku or Beanstalk where you choose Node.js and then deploy a node.js app from local machine through the terminal.
When it comes to EC2, I'm sort of confused on I suppose how it all works. I have to choose an operating system and then I install say node on it. If it's an operating system, how does it know to run a site and all.
For example locally, I have to start up my server. How's it work on the EC2?
Also with EC2, am I able to deploy a project from my local machine like beanstalk/heroku?

It is interesting how little a lot of people who frequently use cloud technologies actually know about the basics. I mean, they use all the fancy stuff, heroku, beanstalk but yet they don't know a thing about how the web works or how you deploy a webservice to a webserver. Makes you actually wonder how often this is the case and why.
