If she has back issues, a futon is not ideal. I am really pleased with my ikea mattress and pillow top. I think going with a firm mattress and covering with a pillow top is the way to go. I'm trying to remember which mattress I have but I may have to check the tag at home. If you're interested, I can update with the names of mine. More on reddit.com

I'm finding this type of combo works well for me too—I'm not on a futon, rather a fully inflated air mattress with two toppers as comfort layers. I honestly think most modern beds are just too soft and unsupportive (and latex is painfully supportive, on me). I wonder if it has something to do with their ability to be roll-packed for shipping. Adulting is for the birds. There are reasons I come back to self-employment, renting, driving beaters... ;) More on reddit.com
