r/gaming on Reddit: After Massive Layoffs, Amazon Studios Announces That New World Won't Be Getting New Content Anymore
October 29, 2025 - This is so crazy: New World released on console just last October and now they announce the end of the game. How will/can anyone trust Amazon going forward after this stunt, at least when it comes to games? I was on the fence about buying New World Aeternum on Xbox just a few months ago.

r/MMORPG on Reddit: Amazon Games Unit Hit by Layoffs, Will Halt ‘Significant Amount’ of AAA Development and Shift Online Strategy
October 28, 2025 -

It sounds like ALL MMO development has been shuttered (Including LOTR) - per the letter that went out.

"We’ve also taken a critical look at the evolving dynamics of games industry and competitive landscape. While we’re proud of our successes in first-party AAA game development and publishing, we have made the difficult decision to halt a significant amount of our first-party AAA game development work – specifically around MMOs – within Amazon Game Studios, including making significant role reductions in our studios in Irvine and San Diego, as well as our central publishing team.

While these changes are significant, we still have a lot going on in game development. Our Montreal studio recently concluded a successful closed alpha of March of Giants and is working hard to finish the game. Our Studio 5 team just released Courtroom Chaos: Starring Snoop Dogg as the launch title in Luna and will continue their focus on more casual and AI-focused games, optimized for Luna. Finally, we are continuing to work with our external studio partners Crystal Dynamics on an upcoming Tomb Raider title and Maverick Games on an upcoming open world driving game."

r/OutOfTheLoop on Reddit: What's going on with Microsoft/Xbox shutting down studios after purchasing them?
March 30, 2024 -

Some context is these two tweets:

There's not a lot of context in the replies - I know Microsoft acquired Bethesda in the last few months, and have read that Bethesda also owned a few other studios, but I don't know the full story. Which specific studios were shut down? What notable games did they make? What're the justifications made by Microsoft for shutting them down?

Answer: In 2021 Microsoft purchased Zenimax Media, the umbrella company that held several prominent game studios such id Software (creators of DOOM) and Bethesda Game Studios (creators of The Elder Scrolls and current developers of the Fallout franchise) among others. Today they announced the closure of Alpha Dog Studio (mobile-focused developer who made a DOOM spin-off that didn't seem super popular), Arkane Austin (developer of 2017's Prey and last year's Redfall), and Tango Gameworks (developers of The Evil Within series and last year's breakout darling Hi-Fi Rush). Microsoft's justification is that they need to streamline their portfolio to deliver more on "high-impact" franchises/games. There were some reports last week that Microsoft is not happy with the rate of releases of games like Fallout, which has seen renewed interest in the wake of Amazon's TV series based on it. Granted, these studios also suffered from low commercial adoption of their games. While well-reviewed, Prey was not a best-seller. Redfall, on top of being one of the most critically-panned games of 2023, also saw its player numbers evaporate when they weren't all that high to begin with. Tango's closure is the most contentious of all, as Hi-Fi Rush was said to have "exceeded expectations" but apparently still wasn't enough. This all ties back into a broader issue that Microsoft has had in the past, and that's fostering new IP. Sony and Nintendo have had good results investing in new properties and fostering them into franchises. Microsoft would release a game when it isn't ready, then opt to fall back on Halo/Gears/Forza when it fails. More questions are being raised about their big bet on their Game Pass service, which was touted to allow developers vastly more creative freedom for games that may not hold the most broad commercial appeal, as even with Game Pass games are still written off as flops and the studios punished for trying to break the mold. Lastly, with Xbox console sales down 60% over the last two years it paints a picture of a company that's increasingly rudderless and non-committal after years of lofty promises. Without hardware growth it's hard, if not impossible, for them to grow Game Pass at all as even new subs on PC slow.

Answer: From their recent acquisitions, MS inherited some great working studios and some that haven't been doing well for years. These particular studios have had limited success and profitability over the last decade. Arcane Austin released Redfall, one of the worst games of 2023 and dug their own grave but even before that Prey and Dishonored 2 failed to meet sales expectations. Tango Game works made a highly praised but not super successful game, HiFi Rush but both Evil Within games and Ghostwire were under performing financial disappointments. Some studios work from day of acquisition, some you need to fix, and some you realize aren't worth the effort to fix when you can spend it elsewhere. I would be willing to bet these studios have been operating at a loss or barely even for years. These weren't all bad games; some of them were great but they were not very successful games and after 2-3 under performing games in a row I doubt many in leadership at these studios were surprised. It's hard to make a case that Zenimax wouldn't have done the same thing.

Hey everyone,

Obviously, we are aware of the current situation related to the layoffs within Amazon and specifically Amazon Games Studio as it relates to New World. We will do our best to keep you updated as we get more information. At this time, our communication channels to the development team have been severely impacted but we will continue to pursue getting this news to you as it becomes available.

Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts, feelings, and concerns regarding the information received today. Try to keep things as civil as possible. We are all very hurt and upset by this news.

We appreciate your patience and understanding through this challenging time.

Best,
r/NewWorldGame Mod Team

Update:

As New World recognizes its fourth anniversary since launching on PC, we reflect on an incredible journey shaped by our dedicated player community. Your feedback and passion have been instrumental in evolving Aeternum into the world it is today, and our team is deeply grateful for this shared adventure. After four years of steady content updates and a major new console release, we've reached a point where it is no longer sustainable to continue supporting the game with new content updates.

The recently launched Season 10 and Nighthaven update will serve as the final content release for New World on PC and consoles. It is only after much consideration that we've reached this decision. To thank you, the New World community, for your support over the years, we have made the Nighthaven release available to you for free. To ensure all New World players can experience this content, we also made Rise of the Angry Earth free for all PC players.

In the coming months, we will provide more details on what to expect and other essential information. Rest assured, our intention is to keep servers operating through 2026, allowing our community time to continue their adventures in Aeternum. Additionally, New World: Aeternum will still be downloadable for PlayStation Plus members (Extra and Premium).

Players of Aeternum: Your dedication and enthusiasm have made this New World adventure an unforgettable journey. We're deeply grateful for every moment you've spent helping build this extraordinary world alongside us. It has been an honor to share Aeternum with you, thank you for helping make this game something truly special.

r/MMORPG on Reddit: Amazon mass layoffs are hitting New World.
October 28, 2025 -

In a sweeping layoff, Amazon is getting rid of 30k+ people today, and in the future they will remove more and more to replace them with AI.

New World is feeling these layoffs, some people are missing from the discord, and artists are posting on Twitter talking about being laid off. We don't know the full extent of the layoffs yet, as they're going out this morning.

I'm worried for the future of the game.

Edit Update: The Amazon Employees subreddit is saying the entire Irvine AGS studio is gone. That's the one that runs New World.

Edit Update 2: Amazon Games jobs listings do not have the Irvine site listed. Probably confirmation New World is cooked.

Edit Update 3: The AGS LinkedIn page no longer exists. I think we might be cooked cooked.

r/lostarkgame on Reddit: Amazon Makes ‘Significant’ Cuts In Video-Game Division
October 28, 2025 -

“Amazon.com Inc. is gutting its video-game division as part of a sweeping layoff that will eliminate more than 14,000 corporate jobs.

The company didn’t say how many roles it will cut in the video-game unit, but noted in a memo to staff on Tuesday that the cuts would largely fall on its offices in Irvine and San Diego, as well at its central publishing division. The company will reduce the amount of work it does on big-budget titles, particularly surrounding massively multiplayer online games or MMOs.”
