As a test I bought an episode of Simpsons from Amazon Prime Video. It was only $2 so I figured I could risk it. And as I suspected, there seems to be no way to actually download the movie file. They want me to download an app to watch it.
Is there any way to actually save this file that I paid for? Or is my only solution for Simpsons to buy the DVDs and rip the episodes myself?

I'm afraid it's as others have said: you bought a license to use that episode, but you don't own it like you would if you had it physically purchased. So you've got three options: Purchase the files on a service of your choice, but know that your license to use the files can be revoked at any time by that service and if that service ever gets closed you don't get to keep any files at all. Purchase actual physical copies from a reputable legal source of your choice and have the files for yourself forever and ever since you can even make as many copies of it as you want and use them as much as you want, but you cannot share them. You can even obtain pirated copies of files you own and it will be fully legal. Take a stroll around the port and ask a few buccaneers about their phat loot, I'm sure they will be thrilled to share the wealth. Yarr harr.

Download the Prime Video app on the device you want to watch movies/shows on- toggle on “free to me”, then you can either browse, search or go to the download tab and it’ll show videos eligible for download. Once the media is downloaded you don’t need a wifi/cellular connection to watch 😊

You can download movies so you can watch them when you don’t have an internet connection, but it’s not the whole inventory…some are downloadable, some aren’t. Once downloaded you can watch them offline, and yes, they’ll play on a plane.
