Why use Amazon RDS when I can host my own Postgres?
I also have a background in Firmware/embedded systems and only got deep into 'the cloud' a few years ago. I would propose to read 'The well-architected framework' from AWS: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/wellarchitected/latest/framework/wellarchitected-framework.pdf To answer your question, look at AWS S3 object storage to get an idea of the concept: https://www.amazonaws.cn/en/s3/faqs/#:~:text=Amazon%20S3%20is%20designed%20to,loss%20of%200.000000001%25%20of%20objects It would be nearly impossible to get this level of redundancy/reliability by 'just' spinning up your own file server AND just paying for what you use. Why is RDS so incredibly expensive
$10/day is a pretty beefy RDS instance (an m6g.large Postgres RDS instance costs ~$3.81/day). What instance size did you provision? How much disk space did you provision? Did you enable Multi-AZ? a billing issue or random charges Highly doubtful that this is a billing issue or a 'random charge'. More likely you misconfigured something and didn't realize it. Why should I use AWS RDS?
I mean if your goal is to learn about how a database works, no I wouldn't use RDS. The whole point of RDS is you don't really have to worry about how the database is hosted and managed in the backend, you just have to worry about your data. More on reddit.com
The cheapest RDS DB instance I can find is $91 per month. But every post I see seems to suggest that is very high, how can I find the cheapest?
