I bought a refurbished computer from Amazon. The seller has more than 100 review in the past month and 3000 lifetime, majority positive.
Many people suggest a fresh install with a used computer. That would be tricky for me right now. I want to be safe, but I also want to do the easiest thing to be safe.
if I just do a factory reset, will that make sure I have nothing in my machine that compromises it?
Is there realistically anything to worry about?

I've bought several refurb computers off amazon, you are going to want to reformat the hard drive / SSD and do a clean install. In my experience they never completely wipe the drives and the old user account will more than likely still probably be on there

Having used one of these at work it I really enjoyed it. Compact, Durable, Sleek and fast (the i7 model). Excellent for travelling etc. I wanted one for myself so I bought one through Amazon (their "Renewed" laptops) for $500. After 1-2 hours of use the screen goes blank and/or scrambles into different colors and I have to shut it off. The other issue is that it would just shut off completely at random. I updated the BIOS to the latest, Formatted/Installed Windows 10 on it. I am aware of some issues where if you plug in the power cord it would freeze - but this is not the case. I gave it a 1 star rating and a long review stating that whoever 'renewed' this laptop at Amazon had no clue what they were doing.
Has anyone else owned one of these? What is your take on it?
I am returning this one to Amazon for a full refund and considering buying another one of these from another online vendor (in hopes it will not be a lemon) because when these E7440's work properly they are excellent machines. I like the size and style of this laptop (the carbon fiber version). Wondered if anyone had suggestions for similar alternatives as well.

That sucks. I had a refurbished order for some wireless neckband earbuds that were defective as hell recently and had to send them back too. I feel your pain. I am returning this one to Amazon for a full refund and considering buying another one of these from another online vendor (in hopes it will not be a lemon) because when these E7440's work properly they are excellent machines. This is where renewed/refurbished is still a great option as they come with that typical 1-year warranty. You could very well try another with great success, at no additional monetary cost. Even new products can easily come defective. Your chance is a bit higher with renewed/refurbished, but if you're willing to accept that and deal with the return process, you'll end up getting a lot more for your money. My made-up gut stats would put you at about 1/50 of getting a defective new product, and 1/10 of getting a defective renewed/refurbished product. I say that as having bought a couple hundred of each over the last few years at work and at home. (Including brands like Dell, Avaya, HP, LG and Amazon's tech line) Honestly, you could probably try another one from Amazon and be fine. Refurbished do typically come with a scratch or something, so be ready for that.

Bought one of their HP EliteDesk 800 G2 systems. Added nvme ssd and upgraded ram size and the darn thing is performing swell. Decent choices for a lot of use cases.

I grabbed one (ThinkCentre M910q) about 2 month ago. The seller seems to have some connection with Amazon, like Amazon certified. So far I'm quite satisfied. Here are some details: The unit was in good condition (cosmetically and functionally) It was shipped with a very cheap keyboard - mouse - WiFi dongle kit. Although it is usable, you may want to bring it to local donation centre. Memory (Samsung) and power adaptor (Lenovo) were genuine parts SSD drive was unknown Chinese brand (King Fast maybe?). Surprisingly though it has been working flawlessly since.
