Amazon relay truck drivers?
First off, if you're going to be driving Amazon loads on the reg, I HIGHLY recommend you join one of the many Facebook pages dedicated to Amazon Relay drivers. Don't get me wrong, if you're not the one owning the truck/company, most of what they talk about in those places won't affect you, but there is still a lot of helpful info in there for you. Next, during a 13 block for Amazon, you could to the entire time with no "break". FMCSA regs don't require you to have any period of not working during your day, they just require you to be not driving for a minimum of 30 minutes after your first 8 hours. Amazon takes advantage of this sometimes, and schedules you to do a bunch of small trips where one or two of them they expect you to be in their yard for about 45 minutes because of waiting time at the guard shack or just moving slowly to get to your drop/pick. At the same time, you might go 2-3 hours during your block waiting for a trailer. If your trailer isn't ready when you show up to the facility, they will send you to a bobtail waiting lot, and your app will update when it's time to grab your trailer. I've had days where more than 7 hours of my 13 is spent waiting in these lots. So it really depends on the day, shift, and overall conditions. Last week, I had five 13 hour blocks. On two of them, I went from MSP to DSM and back. 480 miles round trip. I drove straight through to DSM, dropped my empty trailer, and waited ~two hours for my loaded, and then headed back to MSP. For the other three, I just did a bunch of in market moves. For example, Tuesday: MSP1>DMS2>MSP9>DMS6>MSP1>SMN1>MSP1. 191 miles in total. For pretty much that entire day, I didn't get any "break". I was either dealing with the guard shack, dropping my trailer, waiting for others who were dropping their trailer, connecting to a new trailer, or just driving between facilities. With that said, I also got done about 5 hours earlier than expected. So it all depends. If you're on a route for Amazon and need a break before continuing to drive due to HOS, just report a delay in the app and select HOS break for the reason. More on reddit.com
Will someone please explain what I’m missing here (Amazon Relay). Solo PO with insane mileage/time requirements?
I work at ROC. Sometimes a load will be created with the times made for team drivers but it’ll be sent to the load board as a single driver VRID. If you book a load like this request a call back and have them update the ETA as an Amazon Scheduling error. Even then you may need to file a performance dispute, which takes forever. What are the onboarding requirements for a driver to start hauling Amazon loads?
A carrier needs to invite their drivers to create a profile in the Relay app. Drivers will then need to complete identity verification by submitting a selfie and a photo of their driver’s license. Finally, drivers will need to provide details to initiate a background check - all drivers onboarding to Relay must meet standardized background check requirements before hauling Amazon Relay loads.

Nowadays is not really worth working with them. I mean, it doesn’t cost you much to sign up with them either. You just need to add trailer interchange and commercial general liability which can go from $1k to $2k a year. If you want to sign up to have it ready just in case - that’s fine. But working for them right now is more of a waste of time. Amazon doesn’t care if it’s sustainable to operate your truck or not. They price their loads based on demand. I guess some people like to work for pennies and that’s what they offer right now. Last week one of my OO damaged his trailer and had to leave it at a shop for a week. He did a few runs with Amazon while his trailer was being fixed. There were just a few loads available with inconvenient schedules and paid with pennies. After all deductions were taken (loans, fuel and insurance) he took home less than a driver salary. I am looking right now on their load board and within 75 miles of Chicago they have only 7 loads. All of them pay between $1.39 to $1.68, except one that pay $2.70 a mile but you have to drive 55 miles to pick it up, it has 4 legs and pays $375 for 138 loaded miles (plus whatever empty miles you will have). According to their schedule, it will take almost 8 hours to finish it. This shouldn’t take more than 3 hours to complete. The reason they stretched the schedule so far is because they don’t want to pay $130 - $200 for each individual leg, as a separate load and they bundled it in 4 legs, giving the impression that they pay $2.70 a mile. What is not mentioned there is that you have to wait about 1 hour, maybe more, between each leg. And that is unpaid which means time waisted. $2.70/mile is not bad for this market but if it takes 8-9 hours to make $375 than you are 2 weeks away from bankrupt. Also, making $375 in 8-9 hours as a driver, that’s very good. But working with your own truck, fuel, insurance and tolls, just to name a few major expenses, is absolutely ludicrous. And it doesn’t matter if your truck is paid off or not. A few years ago (Covid times) was completely different. There was a good amount of loads that were fairly priced. Not just per mile but for time also. I was always a fan of short loads (5-30 miles). Loads that take 1-3 hours and paid $200-$500 a load. By the end of the day I made between $1200-$2000. I could spend the nights at home. Weekends too. I could pay all my expenses and still had time to enjoy my life. As you can see today is a completely different picture.
