r/FulfillmentByAmazon on Reddit: How To Generate The End Of Year Tax Report For Amazon Sellers
November 24, 2019 -

It is almost tax time. Here are my two tips.

  1. Run your inventory report as close to Jan 1st as you can. You will need that number for your taxes. If this is your first year - Yes you are taxed on your inventory even though you haven't sold it yet.

  2. Run your Summary Payments Report for the year. This is the best report ever. Everything you need to know about your Amazon income and expense in one place. Here is how to get there.

  • Seller Central

  • Reports

  • Payments

  • Date Range Reports

  • Generate Report

  • Summary report 1/1/19 to 12/31/19

How To Generate The End Of Year Tax Report For Amazon Sellers
There is no federal inventory tax. However, the inventory you own at the end of the year may seem like it is income, but it's not. Here's a rough example... Purchase $100,000 in sellable items. $130,000 gross sales. Pay $20,000 in advertising, shipping, fees, etc. $60,000 inventory at end of year. At first glance, that's: $130,000 sales. $120,000 expenses. $ 10,000 income (profit). Nope. You have $60,000 in inventory. That isn't considered an expense. The $60,000 of inventory isn't "income" (as is a common perception). It's just not an expense. Remember, it's "Cost of Goods SOLD" (COGS), not "Cost of Goods Purchased." In reality, you have: $130,000 sales. $ 20,000 expenses (ads, shipping, etc). $ 40,000 COGS ($100k purchase minus $60k inventory). $ 70,000 income (profit). Now, you have $60,000 in inventory to start the new year. When you sell it, that inventory will become COGS. I hope this helps! More on reddit.com

Amazon Reports are now counting tax paid as "Sales"?
From an accounting perspective (Big 4 accountant here), that is correct accounting practice. You should consider it part of the sale price, and then when an income statement (or taxes) are prepared, the amount it deducted as an expense with all other expenses, to give you a net amount. (Note: this is a super-simplified explanation, please talk to a reputable local CPA if you need additional help with taxes/reporting.) More on reddit.com

What’s the Difference Between Use Tax & Sales Tax?
If a seller doesn’t collect sales tax, the consumer might owe use tax, which is similar to sales tax. · Sales tax: This is collected by the seller at the point of purchase and then remitted to the state. The customer pays the sales tax included in the final price. · Use tax: This is a tax on the use of taxable goods or services within a state, but wasn’t collected at the time of purchase. The responsibility falls on the consumer to report and pay the use tax directly to the state.
