When amazon processes the shipment a tracking number is generated for the package, but it won't appear in UPS' system until they receive the package and process it. As for why UPS hasn't received the package? Anyone's guess. When this happened to us at a warehouse I used to work in, the most common cause was the package being put on the wrong truck, as we had multiple different companies we used to ship items. For the most part, those packages were lost for good, we almost never got them back. Of course, we would rectify the situation for the customer by sending out a replacement part. This is the first time when I dropped off a return I wasn’t given a ups tracking but only a reference number and the receipt says to contact Amazon for status. Anyone else experienced this or know what could be the cause of this?

No matter how you return it, and each different place has it's own "reference number", it is all in the QR code for that item when you process a return. After you return it, go to your Orders page to find it, click on "View return/refund status" link on the right of the item, then click "Print Mailing Label". Here you will see the QR code. Use your phone to see the QR code and you will see a set of characters separated by the "pipe" | symbol. The tracking code is the 12th (at time of this writing), including blank areas of two pipes in a row. The 12 characters will look something like: DxbsINBsMMRA.(fake) that is what will appear on the UPS (or other) receipt.

If you go to the ups tracking site, there's a link to track by reference number. Type that jargon of all letters that was given to you on the ups drop off receipt and you should be able to get updates. Also, if you scan the return qr code that amazon gives you to take to ups, it'll also show the reference number and some other blah blahs..sometimes it does give you a normal ups tracking number along with having the reference number.
