This is the first time when I dropped off a return I wasn’t given a ups tracking but only a reference number and the receipt says to contact Amazon for status. Anyone else experienced this or know what could be the cause of this?

No matter how you return it, and each different place has it's own "reference number", it is all in the QR code for that item when you process a return. After you return it, go to your Orders page to find it, click on "View return/refund status" link on the right of the item, then click "Print Mailing Label". Here you will see the QR code. Use your phone to see the QR code and you will see a set of characters separated by the "pipe" | symbol. The tracking code is the 12th (at time of this writing), including blank areas of two pipes in a row. The 12 characters will look something like: DxbsINBsMMRA.(fake) that is what will appear on the UPS (or other) receipt.

If you go to the ups tracking site, there's a link to track by reference number. Type that jargon of all letters that was given to you on the ups drop off receipt and you should be able to get updates. Also, if you scan the return qr code that amazon gives you to take to ups, it'll also show the reference number and some other blah blahs..sometimes it does give you a normal ups tracking number along with having the reference number.

Could be the number hasn't been "activated" yet. When amazon processes the shipment a tracking number is generated for the package, but it won't appear in UPS' system until they receive the package and process it. As for why UPS hasn't received the package? Anyone's guess. When this happened to us at a warehouse I used to work in, the most common cause was the package being put on the wrong truck, as we had multiple different companies we used to ship items. For the most part, those packages were lost for good, we almost never got them back. Of course, we would rectify the situation for the customer by sending out a replacement part. Hopefully, Amazon will do the same for you.

As for UPS picking up the pallets you have to tell them you have got something to pick up. A seller on eBay drop-shipped something to me from Amazon (I didn't know she was going to do that, and she had the wrong item sent). She sent a QR code to return it to Amazon via the UPS Store which said above and below it, "no package or label needed."
So I took it to the UPS store yesterday (Friday) and they gave me a receipt for it. But the tracking/reference number isn't recognized by my UPS app. And the receipt says "Carrier and Service: Contact Amazon for Status." The tracking number begins with DB, not 1Z.
Is there any way I can track this? The seller seems kinda shady and non-communicative, and seemed upset that I wanted to return the item, and I don't quite trust her to tell me when the package has arrived.

The UPS Store takes two kinds of Amazon returns. One is where Amazon or the seller provide a UPS barcode. The UPS Store would scan your QR code and then print a UPS label. If you had this method, you would have been instructed to provide a box or have UPS Store box it for you at your expense. This would have the typical 1Z number you can track via UPS app or website. The other kind is the one you got. No box needed. UPS Store will put your item in a clear platic bag, then put an Amazon-specific return barcode on the bag. These return bags are then put into large boxes with Amazon returns from other buyers. Once the box is filled, UPS Store tapes it up and sends it to the Amazon facility that Amazon wants it sent to. The DB number is the internal Amazon return number, so you won't see anything until Amazon scans in the plastic bag with your return in it. There is no way to track this via UPS app or website.
