AMD's Phoenix 1 and Phoenix 2 APUs Differ in PCIe Lane Count, Affects NVMe Drive Performance and GPU PCIe Lane Count
Yup. Less for more on the low end is their new MO. The 8500G essentially exists to sell 6 cores to people that don't need them. Meanwhile Intel is still giving 20 lanes on their sub $100 dual core. More on reddit.com

So there won't be any Phoenix-based Desktop APUs this generation? e.g. 7000G

A few months ago there was some speculation indicating that 7000G APUs would be launching later this year, but nothing since then.

With the lower prices of GPUs they don't seem that interesting to me though. Seeing how the 780M performs, getting an RX 6600 and an entry level AM4 CPU would get you more than double the performance compared to a potential 7700G, which would cost $300+: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RouDBbWkKpg

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: Ryzen 8000G [Phoenix] APU Performance Estimates
November 19, 2023 -

I have been following the news surrounding the Zen4 desktop APUs, and it seems that AMD is planning on releasing the AM5 APUs on late January 2024.

There are leaks regarding the models but the most intriguing one to me is the 8700G. It will have 8C/16T and, if the precedents hold true, will be similar to the Ryzen 7 7700. With the downside of having half the cache and being part of the Phoenix line instead of Raphael.

Even still, I believe the capabilities of the 8700G should be a solid upgrade over the previous flagship in 5700G, on the CPU side, that is.

The most important part of an APU is the iGPU and here we should technically be having a massive leap. As the prior generations of Ryzen APUs have all used Vega-based iGPUs, the 8000G series are slated to come with RDNA3 architecture graphics. Not only that but the 8700G will, supposedly, be coming with 12CUs and 768 Shaders. Its predecessor had 8CUs and 512 Shaders. With far more advanced architecture and ~50% increased hardware, the performance should also be substantially better.

That being said, a similar, if not identical, setup can also be seen in AMD's 7040 series laptop processors. Specifically the 7840U. It's iGPU named as Radeon 780M, from my research it is slightly below the performance of a desktop 1650. Which is not too shabby for a 30W Max TDP CPU / APU but if the 8700G will be having performance similar to the 7840U, as the claimed GPU specs align, it feels a bit disappointing.

But still, the 8700G will most likely have more than double the TDP rating of the 7840U and be significantly stronger on the CPU side with all the headroom.

If all else is correct and the only difference between the mobile chips and the 8000G series will be on the CPU side exclusively, how far do you guys think the 8700G can push the envelope for the APUs? Can it bring itself over the desktop 1650 in performance? Or be a disappointment as the 5700G itself is already outperforming the GT1030 with Vega-based graphics.
