I had an amazing experience upgrading from a 3900x to a 5900x. The new CPU was faster and ran cooler.

When I saw the new 5900xt, I thought that this was a no brainer for an upgrade. But, reading I see that the 5900xt is just a binned 5950.

Does it make any sense to upgrade away from a 5900x? I do some light gaming but often run multiple concurrent makemkv/handbrake instances. The extra cores/threads would be nice.

It gets you four more cores. That's it. That's all you get. What I did for ffmpeg HEVC encoding (I do a lot of biking with action cameras) was blow the PRINCELY SUM of £200 on a Xeon E5 2690V4, 32 GB DDR4, a cheap SSD, a motherboard, and reused an old CoolerMaster CM690 case from the late 2000s. An old Dell PERC SAS HBA allowed me to buy dirt cheap refurb SAS drives for bulk storage - They get babied in their first life, and literally nobody wants used SAS drives, so they're cheap as chips. For the tasks I need CUDA for, there's a crappy old GTX 660 in there (which is failing and will be replaced soon). That sits out of the way, nobody can see it, doesn't have a keyboard, mouse, or monitor, I give it render jobs and it does them. For 90-100% CPU utilisation (one instance will do that with 4K, but two or three for 1080p) it runs around the same speed as a 5800X, while costing less than a 5800X, and in very similar power levels.

Hey all!

(I wasn't sure if it was a better idea to post this here or on the AMD subreddit so I posted to both)

I've had my 5900x for a while and I love it. I do run into some CPU bottlenecking on certain games when streaming them. The most obvious example is Cyberpunk. Since it is CPU limited no DLSS (other than Frame-Gen) or anything helps much with the issue.

If the game were to be played on its own the issue is non-existent, but while having all of the streaming software active it hovers around the 40-50fps mark.

If I were to upgrade to the 5950x, do you guys think there would be a worthwhile difference in the game performance? I am hoping that by having more cores to go around, the other software will not cause the game performance to lower.
