I like chase cards. You can start with one of the lower tier cards like Chase Freedom and later upgrade to one of the sapphire cards when you are better situated in life (higher income, better credit). That’s what I would do if I could go back. Answer from darruus on reddit.com

I have a secured credit card with Amex through USAA. I previously had no credit history to speak of. Now a month in, it seems on my profile that I have an Advantagescore of 685. Is this normal or wrong? Is it reliable? I would love any ideas or opinions. Thanks

How do I increase my card limit on the USAA Secured Amex?
Secured cards will often use your initial deposit on the card as your limit and then automatically check your eligibility for a higher credit limit every six to eight months. If you have paid your balance on time and have kept your credit utilization under 30 percent for over six months, you can call USAA customer service and ask for a larger limit.

How many points can a secured card raise my credit score?
It varies depending on your credit history. If you are rebuilding your credit, it will be more difficult to increase your score than if you’re just starting to build credit for the first time. However, no matter your credit history, if you establish good habits and focus on having as little debt on your card as possible, you can earn a good or excellent credit score over time.

April 11, 2025 - Bankrate has partnerships with issuers including, but not limited to, American Express, Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, Citi and Discover. A decent card for eligible military personnel and family members, but it falls short where other secured cards shine.

I have USAA checking and savings accounts. Has anyone applied for or have the USAA Rewards Amex? Is it a "good" card, and it is hard to get approved? It popped up on my online advertisements recently.

I have an Experian FICO score of 708 and a Vantage score of 731. I have 2 Capital One cards, 2 Credit One cards, and was approved for Discover card ($15,000) a month ago.

Is it "good"? Ehhhh... 3% on restaurants isn't bad. 2% on gas & groceries isn't terrible, but you can get 2% on anything with several other cards. 1% on everything sucks. And keep in mind it's an Amex network card (with the potential downsides, as in not everyone takes it) but it's not really an Amex... you don't get Amex offers, and "points" are just a penny, they're not membership rewards points. I'd be getting the cashback rewards+ for 5% on ($3k a year of) gas, personally. USAA will only give $50k (or less... wife and I get denied for "maximum credit limit reached" with 2 USAA cards totaling $32k, income roughly 3x that) so I'd conserve it for something better. They also will not change a card, so you'd have to cancel & reapply if you want something else in the future. Penfed power cash rewards is flat 2% if you're military/veteran, if not you have to have a (not free without hoops) checking account or only get 1.5%. Penfed isn't as technology-inclined as USAA, but they've been pretty good to deal with for me... a little inept, but helpful when I call them.

If increasing your credit limit is your goal, I'd suggest becoming a member of Navy Fed. USAA is great (I still keep checking and savings with them), but most of their banking products aren't the most competitive, and their insurance rates have left something to be desired (unless you're grandfathered into the "actual" USAA insurance company getting low rates and large dividends, and not one of their off shoots). Navy Fed for credit cards specifically is hard to beat, and they are known for opening their purse strings - $25,000 limits are quite common (though you may need to open a second card after 91+ days to see it). Their Amex offering blows the USAA one out of the water (3x on gas/restaurants/groceries/transit) and has much lower interest rates as well.
