I LOVED the historical doll movies as a kid my absolute favourite being Samantha’s movie, still watch it every now and then. It has got me thinking, I wonder why Kristen or Addy didn’t get a movie. A movie about Kaya would’ve been really interesting as well. Do you think this is something American girl potentially missed the mark on not continuing to make these movies?

I know Melody kinda got a movie but it didn’t feel the same as the older ones. I learnt a lot from these movies, like the orphan train, dresses made out of chicken food bags, victory gardens just to name a few, I’ve even gone on to research more about the history as an adult. It’s a shame we didn’t get more movies like those ones.

I think the historical AG characters they had at that time don't lend themselves to Best Friend dolls in the same way, and the point of making an American Girl movie is so you can sell dolls. Kaya's sister, Speaking Rain, would look just like Kaya does. She'd have the same face mold, wear her hair the same way, and dress in very similar clothing. Most people don't want two nearly-identical dolls - especially kids, who might only get one or two dolls in a year. (Also, the Nez Perce people being okay with the Kaya doll and books doesn't necessarily mean they'd also be okay with their culture being portrayed in a movie.) The depiction of Kirsten's friend Singing Bird is kind of racist in the original books. It's racist in a way that was very normal in media from the 1980s, but as a character she's still kind of just there to further Kirsten's story, and the optics of releasing her just to be an accessory for the blonde settler doll aren't great. Additionally, you'd need permission from the tribe, and there's every possibility they would have said no (or that they were approached and did say no), The recent re-released edition of Kirsten Learns a Lesson is a bit better and fixes some of the more egregious stuff. Josefina's Pueblo friend, Mariana, has some of the same problems as Singing Bird and my understanding is that even in her brief depiction there were cultural inaccuracies. It's possible you could do Josefina's 12-year-old sister Clara, but while they've done a handful of older characters now, they weren't doing that back in the 00's when the movies were being made. She'd mostly wear a lot of the same stuff Josefina does, and even with only Josefina on her own there seems to be a limit on how many camisa-and-skirt outfits parents are willing to buy for AG prices. Also Josefina's books are mostly about her family healing from the grief of her mother's death, in a way that doesn't lend themselves as well to a 90 minute movie that's trying to draw in kids who are either too young to read or who aren't good enough at reading to get through the American Girl books, so that they'll beg their parents for dolls. (Rescuing Nellie! Horse adventures! Thwarting a crime! Practicing for the big performance!) I've seen a lot of people say they thought Josefina's books were boring, and while I don't agree with that, I do think they have less . . . spectacle than some of the other AG books do. Even Sarah - and look, I love Sarah, I have a Sarah Moore doll - has the problem of being even poorer than Addy's family. You can't really sell a bunch of fancy dresses for her, and you can't really change the ending of her story without cheapening it. The point of the role Sarah plays in Changes for Addy is showing that even though things end up MOSTLY alright for Addy's family at the end, slavery tore families apart and the long-reaching consequences of slavery didn't end when slavery did. And the other available option would be Harriet, who's just awful to Addy and Sarah. (I do think that she's why we eventually get Cecile later on, who can have fancy dresses but is also a nice person.) Additionally, the Recession happened.

Kit’s movie was incredibly well done for what it was, so I can only assume that Mattel has the numbers to justify the decision to not do another theatrical release. I’d have loved a Rebecca movie. NYC and Coney Island in particular were so cool in that era.
