Yes, doing anything to a PC when the BIOS is updating bricks the BIOS chip on the motherboard. As most don't have the skills or tools to manually flash a BIOS chip, it means it is time for a new motherboard.

November 8, 2024 - As you know, the procedure is to download the most recent BIOS from the manufacturer, then copy the CAP file and the Microsoft Windows 'renamer' executable to the root of the USB stick, use the renamer to rename the CAP file - and likely do something else to the CAP file - then go back into BIOS, where - in my case - the ASUS EZ Bios Update utility recognizes the now-renamed CAP file and updates the BIOS.
