Should I get a card to use internationally that *isn't* Amex?
Yes. Forget about overseas, every Amex user should always have a backup Visa or MC; there are plenty of places here in the states that don't take Amex. I run into them every once in a while. For example, I couldn't pay for parking in the city I live in if I only had Amex. I couldn't pay for my kid's summer camp. I couldn't buy anything on the Nintendo eShop. The list goes on. Foreign transaction fees
No matter what card you use, some ATMs or Merchants will give you the option to charge in your currency (eg USD). They usually say upfront that there’s like a 5% fee or if they don’t it might be even worse. You always want to decline this and charge in the local currency. More on reddit.com
