Hi, relatively new to AMEX here and as are all of us here, my girlfriend and I are trying to maximize the 5x points multiplier.

Recently learned about the prepaid credit card tricks but I’ve read mixed reviews online. Some say do it but be careful and buy a banana but some say avoid it all together.

Just wondering what everyone’s experience with it is. Good? Bad? How long have you been doing it?

Amex cannot view what you buy on an item level for any transaction. Unless you're frequently making transactions for flat amounts ($100, $500) they would have no way of suspecting you are buying gift cards/prepaid credit cards. The bigger concern about prepaid credit cards/gift cards is potentially buying one that's been compromised through scams. If you buy prepaid credit cards, you need to ensure you buy $500 ones because of the activation fee. This ensures you're maximizing your true points return.

I checked balance on 2 prepaid cards and they were emptied within half an hour. Ever since then I haven’t checked the balance online, just kept a mental balance and it’s been fine (6-7 cards)

I would have no problem making the 5k spend needed for some of the AmEx products, if more of the places I visit took AmEx (I'm talking to you, Costco!)

While checking some things online, I saw that PetroCanada offers a prepaid Mastercard. I haven't gone to the store yet to check the fine print (service fees etc.) but if I can use the MasterCard to shop at Costco (and get PetroPoints as well...) I'd be a happy camper.

Has anyone tried this, and am I missing something blindingly obvious?

I had the same problem trying to meet the min spend for the business card. I ended up using it to pay off me and my mom's home and auto insurance for a year (she paid me back), which took off a huge chunk. Then towards then end I used it to buy gift cards for places I shopped often anyways, like food basics/metro, beer store, Esso/Ultramar. I figured that wasn't actually extra spending, it was just pre-spending on stuff I would've bought in the next few months anyways. Yes it sucks that costco doesn't take Amex anymore or I would've just gotten a ton of GCs from them instead. I think you'll find that buying prepaid MCs aren't really worth it. It costs somewhere between $5-$10 for every $100. And some of them have monthly fees as well.

This would work. Just check the fine print, and beware of fees - a $100 prepaid MC will cost more than $100. If possible, using Plastiq to pay some bills could be more cost effective. Anyways, the 40k points are worth way more than whatever fees you would pay!
