The only risk IMO is clicking on the link, which you already did. Either this is a clever, well-written email to get you to download a virus, or, it's real (such as a gift from your employer, or a gift sent to the wrong person). More on reddit.com

Can someone PLEASE help me...I can't activate my Amex gift card online, I get a message that says "The system has experienced an unknown error. Please wait a few minutes and try to log in again." and this happened yesterday as well as today. When I call the # on the card they tell me they can't help me and that I have to call the number on the card........wtf?

Figured I'd chime in cuz I was experiencing a similar issue. The back of my card says to visit amexgiftcard.com/balance to check the balance. I was getting hit with the same error message as u/Lemonhead171717 when trying to check the card balance. After calling the number on the back of the card (1-888-846-4308), the recording prompts the user to visit https://balance.amexgiftcard.com/ to check the balance. Punching in the card info at the second url did the trick.

Hey everyone, I just really quickly wanted to see if anyone could help me with this.
I recently got an American Express gift card, one of the holiday ones, and wherever I try to use it online, it makes me give a 4 digit code, but the card only has a 3 digit code. There is no 4 digit one on the front like most places and sites say there should be. Its just the 3 digit CVV on the back. 15 digit card number with 3 digits.
I called the support line, but there was no options to get what I needed answered, so I was hoping possibly someone could help.

On 11/22/2024, I purchased a $100.00 prepaid American Express gift card from my local Walgreens. I went to activate it and use it and it was locked. I called customer service and they said the only way to unlock it is to get a replacement card in the mail in 3-5 business days. So I gave my information. Almost a month later and I still haven’t received anything. I’ve had this thing requested three different times. The rep said the card will come via fedex, but when I asked for a tracking number to track the card, they advised they don’t have one to give me. I called again today (because it’s still not there) and advised the reps that I need to know when my card will be here because it’s been almost a month. I told him I’ve been recording every call and the current call was being recorded. He advised that he does not consent and would be disconnecting the call. I called back and talked to a supervisor (and didn’t make the mistake of mentioning the recorded calls again). The guy told me that “I need to trust that I will get my card, it should’ve come tonight but to give them a couple more days to see if it arrives. Again I asked for a tracking number and he advised that there isn’t one but he could give me the last 4 digits of the card number - as if that was supposed to calm my fears. Looking at the back of the card, I’m wondering if it’s legitimate and how a card could be fake when they sell several of them at Walgreens. (Including a photo of the back of the card and blacked out any numbers in case it’s real). Why is only part of the barcode there?!? I don’t have the packaging still to compare it to the back of the card.
