r/techsupport on Reddit: How do I recover failed BIOS flashing on AMI BIOS?
March 31, 2020 -

So, what happened is that I'm trying to edit bios logo, and flashing it via windows with AFUWIN. Bios manufacturer is AMI BIOS.

The next thing that happened after restarting is it won't enter windows. Not even I can enter BIOS configuration. On bottom right corner, there's code 0033. According to AMI BIOS, this means "Initializes silent boot module. Set the window for displaying text information."

I have tried CMOS clearing (done with jumper), it didn't do anything. Tried to enter BIOS menu with Delete button, nada. RMA is out of question, the motherboard is old! So I left with two options:

  1. Take out the EEPROM and program it with Arduino as it's not soldered. Or...

  2. Initialize AMI BIOS recovery method (CTRL+HOME)

Obviously I'm trying method no.2 as it's simpler. However there's some problem. Somewhere on internet, it says that I need to use floppy disk. I don't have any. Other says that it needs USB flash drive formatted with FAT32. Both method requires BIOS file to be named as AMIBOOT.ROM

I have done both: flash drive is FAT32 and AMIBOOT.ROM is present. It doesn't detect the BIOS file as I waited for 5 minutes, nothing happened. So please tell me what's wrong with my method? Thanks!

Edit: I realized ASRock might've disabled ctrl-home combination, from this page dated 2004.

Yet another edit: been trying to flashing it with Arduino (serfrog+frser_duino) it didn't work. Good news is the BIOS chip wasn't toast.

Final edit: after several flashing attempt, it failed. During removal of chip, one of the eeprom leg is broken. Guess I must take the mobo to official repair center, they might have bios chip in hand. If you're reading this, bios chip is "mx25l8006e". (Solved)

Another edit as 31 March 2020: it worked! I'm using different bios chip by winbond w25q80bvatg, flashing with ch341a, verifying, and it booted up wonderfully!

Computer specs:

  • Asrock G41M-VS3 (this)

  • BIOS manufacturer: AMI BIOS

  • Mobo year of production: circa 2009

r/razer on Reddit: Razer Blade 2017 AMI BIOS Recovery Key Combination
July 6, 2018 -

I bricked my Razer Blade 2017 during the installation of the April 2018 BIOS Update. Basically when I clicked install, I encountered a brief update confirmation with a progress bar. Then I heard a popping noise in my headphones and the screen shut off. After that I was unable to get my Razer Blade to boot at all; it just turns on with a black screen and keyboard lights.

I read about undoing bad BIOS flashes, particularly for AMI (American Megatrends Inc.) BIOS which the RB 2017 uses. The full description is here: https://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/AMI_BIOS_Recovery.pdf

However, it requires a Ctrl+Home Key combination to access the recovery, and as far as I can tell the RB doesn't have a home button. Also, USB Keyboards don't seem to do the trick. Some laptop manufacturers have different key combinations. Does Razer maybe have a different one?

Sometimes, taking out the CMOS battery to clear the configuration settings or resetting the CMOS jumper switch to clear the CMOS may help too. Only the BIOS file is needed. For AMI BIOS recovery, the floppy disk does not have to be bootable and no flash utility is required.

r/pcmasterrace on Reddit: I Can't Access bios at all, Stuck at Ami screen!
May 12, 2023 -

So I just built my new pc(yay!). Turned it on, then I proceed to get a screen that I'll show in the comments.

It says two things,

  1. "Please enter setup to recover BIOS setting"

  2. "When RAID configuration was built, ensure to set SATA Configuration to RAID mode "

PC specs(i'm pretty sure they're all compatible)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 3.8 GHz 8-core Processor

  • Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S chromax black 55 CFM CPU Cooler

  • Mobo: Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI II ATX AM4 Motherboard

  • RAM/Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory

  • Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME SSD

  • GPU: Gigabyte GAMING OC Rev 2.0 GeForce RTX 3070 LHR 8 GB Video Card

  • Chasis: Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-DELTA RGB ATX Mid Tower Case

  • PSU: Corsair RM750e (2022) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Things I tried.

  • Calling Asus Tech Support(They sucked)

  • Replacing CMOS Battery

  • Exchanging the previous Motherboard for an new one and rebuilding my pc in the process.

  • Pressing ctrl alt delete many times.

  • Reseating My CPU, RAM, and GPU.

  • Flashing the BIOS(Twice!)

I know my keyboard works because my computer reboots when I Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

Please give any advice that you know.

r/techsupport on Reddit: Acer BIOS update bricked PC, AMIBOOT.ROM boot block recoverable?
March 31, 2016 -

Hi all, I have an Acer Aspire CT-220 that had a BIOS update performed that half way through the machine froze. It now no longer boots (obviously). When powered on after a few minutes it gives you 2 beeps (which according to the AMI documentation) means it can't find the AMIBOOT.ROM file (which should be on a USB). The problem is the BIOS available from Acer is a .CAP file (usually in this case it would be a .ROM file that can be renamed to AMIBOOT.ROM and hopefully recover the system). Does anyone know of tools that can convert the .CAP file into something the AMI boot block recovery can understand or know any secret file names to rename the .CAP to? Any help would be appreciated.

I have used my googlefoo for over a day and found nothing of interest/help.

Thanks.

I have SOLVED this issue, and hopefully the following information will be useful to many people.

Main information is on this site: bios-mods.com/bios-recovery/

Basically you need to download the BIOS update from your manufactures website, load it into one of the tools listed on the page above (even thought I believe my BIOS is a AMI one, the AMITool didn't work but the PhoenixTool did). Once loaded it should tell you the recovery name of the BIOS (in my case it was RCVBOOT.CAP). Rename the BIOS file and put it on a USB stick and boot the PC. Hopefully it will boot into a the BIOS setup, you will have a Recovery tab, where you can write the BIOS to the PC and VOILA your PC should write the BIOS and reboot!

Acer Aspire CT-200 BIOS Recovery name: RCVBOOT.CAP (not AMIBOOT.ROM)

2. It can take up to 30+ seconds until the BIOS File that was renamed to AMIBOOT.ROM is found. {Drive Bay can be opened to try a different CD without turning off or restarting the system.} 3. When the system finds the BIOS File, LED Status will change to "Testing RTC" and there should be a message on the screen indicating that the Flash Recovery Procedure has started.

I tried assembling everything outside of the case in case there were any issues. I managed to boot into the American Megatrends screen where is displays: Version 2.20.1271 BIOS Date: 01/04/2022 Ver:15 Press <Del> to enter setup

New CPU installed, fTPM/PSP NV corrupted or fTPM/PSP NV structure changed.

I’ve tried pressing/holding delete on this page and when powering on, but I can’t enter BIOS. I have tried all the usb ports on the motherboard, and tried different F keys to see if that would work. NumLock does light up, so I know it’s connected. And I did press “N” once to “keep previous fTPM” record, so I know that inputs are registered, but I can’t enter the BIOS page.

I have also tried resetting the CMOS, by removing the button battery, but the result is the same.

Any ideas on what to do? I wanted to be able to monitor my specs before installing the whole thing inside the case.

r/HX99G on Reddit: Back Up & Edit AMI BIOS Settings From Inside Windows
February 4, 2024 -

I came across a cool method to read all AMI BIOS settings, make changes, and write them back to the BIOS. Obviously this is an advanced topic, and you have the ability to mess up your settings (in which case you'll need to use the little pin on the front of the machine to reset the BIOS), so just be careful and don't edit anything you're unsure of.

Video Link (not my video; sometimes the video is unavailable.)

Many settings are available from within the BIOS itself, but it can be difficult to find some of them, and searching within a text editor is much easier. The main changes I make are disabling Global C-state Control, and enabling Opcache Control. See other posts on this subreddit for changes I've experimented with over time.

Okay. I give up. Event viewer occasionally says Secure Boot CA/keys need to be updated. For other reasons it seemed like the BIOS needed to be updated but it was a hassle so I put it off. But I have no idea which exact utility and variant I need to use to update my BIOS. Sure, we are told to download the correct update file from your computer or motherboard manufacturer's website and etc but it isn't always clear to the ignorant such as myself which is the correct update file and/or utility.

r/ASUS on Reddit: PC stuck in BIOS after ami hard disk imminent failure warning
October 15, 2022 -

Earlier today I was gaming like usual. I left my PC alone for a few minutes only to come back and find it in BIOS. I saved and exited but when the PC restarted, it launched back into BIOS again. This boot loop has happened to me before, but I was able to get out of it eventually by resetting BIOS to default. However this time, after I manually shut off the PC with the power button, I was presented with a warning from American Megatrends upon startup.

AMI warning

So I hit F1 like it says and I'm back in BIOS.

My BIOS EzMode page

I've tried resetting to defaults, booting in Windows UEFI Mode, saving and exiting, exiting without saving, using the power button to power off and on again, switching off the PSU and unplugging power and all peripherals then replugging and powering on, and holding down the power button for 20-30 seconds to try and enter safe boot, all to no avail. I've opened up the case and couldn't find any obviously loose cables or damaged hardware.

Hitting F8 to open the boot menu yields a blank menu.

Old forums and support threads are saying this may be an issue with the M.2 monitoring software, for which a firmware update exists to patch it. Obviously I can't get into Windows to download this. Alternatively my harddisk may actually be fried I suppose?

  • 1TB NVMe SSD

Conditional Information

Yesterday my rommate's prebuilt Skytech PC stopped working. It simply would not power on. Since then they've managed to get it to turn on but it does not output anything to the monitor. We both use surge protectors, but I find it odd their issues occured within a day of mine. I am not aware of any recent power outages in our area.

Because of their PC problems, I offered to let them try my display port cable which connects directly to my graphics card. It's possible they were less than careful when disconnecting/reconnecting it to my machine. Could this have jostled the graphics card and caused my issue?

My PC has occasionally made a creaking noise which Google tells me might be a faulty fan, water cooler, or disk reader/writer.

TL;DR

My PC is stuck in a boot loop with a harddisk failure warning I've never seen before. Do I need to buy a new component? Change some settings in BIOS? Install a new copy of Windows? I am a tech layman with little idea of how to proceed!

If your attempt at a bios flash went wrong don't panic: Nowadays motherboards offer bios recovery functions that can help you un-brick your beloved machine. Every manufacturer seems to take a different approach and some of the information can be hard to find so here is a list for common motherboard manufacturers:

Warning 1: The only information below I have recently used myself and can vouch for is the MSI bios recovery. Check your own motherboard manual first to see are there any specific instructions for your hardware.

Warning 2: Do not try any of this unless you are sure the problem really is a corrupt bios. If you have recently attempted to flash a bios and if the machine cannot POST (power on self test) after several attempts then you may have a corrupt bios. The screen will probably not say anythign at all or it may warn you of a corrupt bios. If you get as far as a bios setup page or if you get to "looking for an operating system" message then your bios is probably OK and resetting the CMOS settings to default may get you up and running. In fact you should always reset the CMOS with the motherboard jumper anyway just in case this is the problem.

ASROCK corrupt bios recovery (Crashless bios): I can't find a good web source but search your motherboard manual for crashless bios. It probably has a paragraph something like this one: "ASRock Crashless BIOS allows users to update their BIOS without fear of failing. If power loss occurs during the BIOS updating process, ASRock Crashless BIOS will automatically finish the BIOS update procedure after regaining power. Please note that BIOS files need to be placed in the root directory of your USB disk. Only USB 2.0 ports support this feature"
