ANCHOR PODCAST REVIEW: PROS & CONS OF USING ANCHOR
Thanks for posting... I use Anchor and have used other hosting services like Libsyn in the past. I have zero complaints about Libsyn - they're an excellent service, but I think most hosting services will not offer much in terms of editing services or ad placement. Anchor is one of the few that does, but of course they're going to be very limited when you compare them to a DAW like Audition and/or direct sponsorship deals. I can't bash too hard on something that provides basic hosting, unlimited storage, and easy distribution for free though. My initial concerns were surrounding the question, "who owns my content if Anchor hosts it for free?" Once I had confirmation in writing from their support team that I still own my content, Anchor does exactly what I expect it to at zero cost while I record and edit in other software, whether it's for an audiodrama, interview-based show, or other. The only feature I wish they would add is within their monetization model. I have used their Anchor ads twice now. The first time, my ad played until I got over the $50 mark in my "Anchor Wallet" and then the ad just stopped accruing money (even though it was still playing the ad on my show). After multiple messages going back and forth with their support team, I was told that the ad was only for a limited number of impressions, and that it basically expired. This was a big problem for me... I definitely don't want to use ads for free! I recently began using their ad placement again, and after it accrued a bit over $100 (it's now over $140 and still running), I thought I'd reach out to support again since I wasn't informed of many details about their model except that it was a CPM model (and the dollar amount)... I was simply asked to record an ad with points A, B, and C in my own voice. While their support team couldn't tell me the terms of the current ad I was running (which I thought was odd), they explained that various advertisers used different models. Some are CPM based, some are for a limited time, and some only pay out a certain amount of money as a cap. When I further explained that the ad was for Anchor, and not for an affiliate, they still couldn't give me complete information on those details for my current ad. They were able to tell me that it's a CPM model, but could not tell me how long it would accrue income or if there was a cap. So I found myself checking my expectations once again using their free service. The problem I had with my first ad was that it kept playing on my show long after it stopped accruing revenue. In other words, it forced me to devalue the deal and give free advertising out until I chose to pull it down. Their support team informed me that wasn't supposed to happen, and the ad should stop once the campaign is maxed out. So I'm thinking it could have been a glitch in their system. If it happens again, I may opt out of using Anchor-based ads altogether, but I'm willing to give them a second chance. Either way, they aren't required to be utilized in exchange for free hosting. There's nothing from preventing me to obtain other advertising sponsors on my own, and my show is at the point in downloads that if I were still using a paid service, I'd have to pay more per month to host the show than most basic plans cover to account for a higher volume of downloads and/or storage. Considering the last response from their support team, I hope they take my feedback and make some changes, but you never know... I'll quote a portion of their response here: "I completely understand that more information about specific end dates or impression/revenue caps would be helpful and maybe even add to your experience with Anchor. I'm passing that feedback along to our Ad Ops team as we continue to improve podcasting with Anchor." I'll stick with them for now... I still don't know of many other podcast hosts that make running ads so seamless for monetization, but they have some work to do with transparency of terms in this light. More on reddit.com

Pros & Cons of using Anchor?
Like other people said: the risk of not owning your feed/content with it ties to spotify I would not be suprised if they at some stage make it spotify exclusive. Also the way the make it harder for other players to work properly is annoying. If you host with them I would atleast use a custom domain for the feed and have everything backed up More on reddit.com

Now, reading this subreddit, I ... from Anchor and recommend manually seeding the feeds yourself. I chose ‘distribute for me’ is it too late. :( I am pretty sure I can’t change it after the fact. January 31, 2025 - Most podcast hosts are just that…podcast hosts. They’re a place to upload your MP3s, look at your stats and fill in your show details but apart from that, there aren’t many bells and whistles. Anchor is different because it’s designed to be a podcast host but also a place to edit and create your show.

The production quality of your podcast begins with your mic selection, but it doesn’t end there. Who you choose to host your podcast will be just as vital to your success as a podcaster. Today we’re taking a closer look at Anchor.fm and what it brings to the table as a free-to-use host that gives you great bang, for no buck.

PROS OF USING ANCHOR

Every service you use has pros and cons. But don’t let the no price tag fool you. You’re still getting Anchor at a price, although it may not be a monetary one — for now. Before you decide whether or not Anchor is the right choice for your podcast, carefully consider the pros and cons. You can then determine what is essential for the hosting and distribution of your podcast.

Easy Distribution

Anchor distributes your podcast to quite a hefty list of platforms. Platforms that include Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and others. Every name on their list of distributors is the most common platform listeners use to listen to their favorite podcasts.

Simple Monetization

You can choose to monetize your podcast with a simple click of a button. This feature is unique to Anchor. Although sites like Podbean have similar options, it’s not as easy to use as Anchor’s feature.

Free To Use

For Podcasters with a tight budget, Anchor’s free-to-use service that distributes your podcast to some of the most popular streaming services is likely to be convincing enough. It also has enough basic features that make it worth your while if you’re starting and don’t have much experience creating or managing podcasts.

CONS OF USING ANCHOR

However, for every pro to Anchor there’s a con. These cons aren’t too concerning on face value but as you start scaling your podcast these cons can be debilitating.

A Lack Of In-Depth Editing

If you want an app that does everything — like the premium version of Soundtrap, you’re going to find that Anchor is at a deficit.

But even looking at Anchor’s editing in its entirety cannot compete against other free-to-use editors like Audacity. Essentially you will want to record your audio on one software, possibly edit in another software, and then once you have a final edit, upload that to Anchor.

This wouldn’t be an issue if Anchor didn’t mention the editing as part of its core features, and if that feature would sway you, it’s good to note it’s lacking in that aspect.

One Podcast Per Account & No Tiered Access

If you know how many people it takes to operate a successful podcast you’d know that having more than one access point is vital.

Even if you don’t have a production team, an editor, sound engineer, producer, or co-host, you may still want to have more than one podcast on one hosting service, just to make it easier for yourself. This is especially true if you’re a co-host of several podcasts or a producer of several podcasts. Although this feature is only available on premium services like BuzzSprout or Captivate, if you need more than one member in your team, having to pay a little extra for this vital feature shouldn’t be a problem.

Limited Interviewing Options

Remote interviewing has been on the increase ever since COVID-19 has made social distancing a new normal. However, remote interviewing also allows you to interview guests from all over the state, country, and even the world.

Anchor allows you to host up to five people on one call. This is a fantastic feature, except you need to be hosting the interview on your phone. If you have a professional setup and studio, you know that it will be nearly impossible to replicate the same sound quality on your phone. Essentially, making Anchor’s interviewing feature a great option if you don’t have a professional level setup and want to conduct remote interviews.

Conclusion

While Anchor is a superior platform for any Podcaster in the initial phases of podcasting, it’s by no means a one-stop-shop that will encompass your needs as a Podcaster throughout your lifecycle in the industry. What Anchor does, it does well: distribution and monetization.

Beyond those aspects, it leaves a lot to be desired. But considering you’re getting the platform (and hosting for your podcast) for free, that should be enough to tide you over, perhaps until the inconvenience of it all becomes unbearable.

I'm using Anchor for launching my new Podcast "OntheMatters", an italian format of infotainment product. I am just published the third episode. I found Anchor very easy for beginners like i am and i would suggest it to everyone who is gonna start a podcasting. the only negative feature is the delay in reaching and showing data. I will see what happen with the monetization function that is still not available in Italy.

So I’ve been using Anchor to post podcast content to Spotify because it’s a free ‘hosting’ platform, but I’ve noticed that most podcasts that are much ‘bigger and seemingly more professional’ all seem to use more official RSS feeds. Is there a very specific reason for this? Is it the only way to get monetised and more exposure? If anyone else knows more about Anchor, could you share what any drawbacks are? Thanks.
