r/avengedsevenfold on Reddit: What's your lyrical interpretation of Angels?
September 21, 2016 -

I was just looking through the Stage lyric booklet and was kind of puzzled by the lyrics in Angels. I'm having a hard time seeing how they apply to the AI/space concept. To me, it seems like they are from the perspective of a depressed or world-weary person. What do you guys think?

Yes, in my perspective it's about regrets. It doesn't seem to fit the concept, but it's so sad and beautiful (and relatable). I think it's a great fear of us as humans at least once in our lifetime. I'm going through this right now, I'm always afraid of doing the wrong move and only realising it when there's no way back anymore. It seems to be pretty common, especially in a society like this, where we always see people being successful, everything going so well for everyone we know, and then we start wondering what we're doing wrong. It's terrible but I believe it's one of the symptoms of modern society.

I definitely think, like others have said, the song is about regrets. Regrets you have in life. The album deals with AI, power corruption, and how small our problems seem to the vast size of the universe. I think this and Simulation act as the transitions into the second act of the album (the space theme). You could view this song as someone who has created AI too powerful for the world (as talked about in Creating God, the song before it) and the regrets they have in doing that. You could also view this as someone who has made lots of problems in their life and sinned and is now realizing that they have wasted time on these issues because in the grand scheme of things, what do our problems really matter when we're one tiny dot in an unending universe. It could also be viewed using that second method except towards faith. The person has shaped their entire life around their beliefs and is now founding that they might be wrong. I feel this song can be interpreted to both themes of the album and that's why I like it so much. I'll expand on this part by part in the song. The first verse opens with that feeling of regret. But it also shows where the person is in their life. The person has spent years shaping their life and making their motives clear. But of course life always fights back and the days have not been kind for this person. They've ran into problems and things have gone wrong but this person still preservers and reaches their goal. But in fighting the problems in life, the person has lost the spark they had in life. "Once a steady gaze and charming smile, has been buried in the lines I find." As they continue this path in life they find that their happiness and joy are slowly drained. The chorus of this song is especially powerful. The person is crying out to someone (they use the word "mother" so it could be referring to the characters actual mother or a mother-like figure). The person is crying out for this other person to wash the Devil from their hands. To cleanse this person of the sins they had done. Then he prays to the Lord that he will be able to continue on in his life. Now the second half of the chorus has the person questioning their faith. "Mother tell me was it all a lie?" Is everything this person has shaped their life around believing in a lie? They ask to see where the angels die. The person wants proof of Angels/God existing. The second verse dives back into regrets. Words that never found the person's lips, words they wish they had said but know they'll soon forget. The person believed that they should not look back on things in life. They should not regret. But this person seems to lose their grip and finds themselves constantly wishing they could do things differently. The faster he runs from his problems, the closer they get. In the third verse the person finally asks for forgiveness. The person realizes their mistakes. They are no longer living in denial and running from "the gun" (their problems). The person acknowledges that they "took the road but should have chased the stars." They took the wrong path, and are finally realizing it. They find themselves lost from home. They have strayed from their morals. They lost the memories of the good times by wasting it wishing they could change the bad times. At the end the person simply asks anyone to speak their name, and forgive them. I tried to break this down as best as possible and I'm sure some of my interpretations are wrong. This is how I see it. The more I read through it the more I see it as a person who was religious in faith has found that faith being slowly broken down throughout their life. They realize that they can't possibly believe their faith is real. They ask to be shown proof. They regret everything they have done in life because of wasting their time believing in something they no longer think is real.

July 18, 2018 - Oh God I'm going insane Chasing after you, please don't leave me I see your heart washing away And that's how you left me in the cold It's pitiful how you let me lose You better run, better run Your time is out, nothing you can do Better run, better run I can't remember when you hurt me so bad But now the tables turn, apocalypse is coming I can't remember when you left me so sad But in the end I learned it rains in hell and angels could be bad Some say I'm losing my faith But I know I'm just living on a prayer Time keeps slipping away Yeah, I'll watch you burn down this house that we made It's

'Cause I've been told That salvation lets their wings unfold So when I'm lying in my bed Thoughts running through my head And I feel that love is dead I'm lovin' angels instead And through it all She offers me protection A lot of love and affection Whether I'm right or wrong And down the waterfall Wherever it may take me I know that life won't break me When I come to call She won't forsake me I'm lovin' angels instead When I'm feeling weak And my pain walks down a one-way street I look above And I know I'll always be blessed with love And as the feeling grows She breathes flesh to my bones And

Its on Dictaphone and it is clearly Robbie Williams singing I'm loving an angel instead along with the other lines which remain the same.He bought the rights for the song and that was that. The writers name gets a brief mention he said on the attached literature that accompanied the single. However the writer felt he would have been accredited with the writing the lyrics.

Carla from Ft Worth, TxTo me the song is about suiciding and finding the forgivness that they couldnt gain in the "dark, cold hotel room" in the "arms of the angel". The only means of escape is to die and as the blood and all memories seep from their veins they realise that they can be lifted from their guilt and be empty and weightless and finally free. Lyrics for Angels by Robbie Williams - Songfacts
This is incorrect according to the actual writer of the song. he made this public on TV3 morning show last year.He seemed annoyed that he will never be accredited for this song which mean so much to him and his little child. He said and I must agree with him that buying the rights to a song doesn't mean that you should be allowed to put your name as in having created it. If you listen to the original on Dictaphone you will hear Robbie sing I'm loving an angel instead which was the more correct line since it was a bout the writers daughter who was in his eyes floating up to heaven. When people actually realize what the song is about it makes more sense.Robbie he claimed was in concert in Dublin at the time and he approached him with his demo and both of them sat down and sang it through.
