The best way to learn to draw manga, anime, or anything, is to learn to draw. Start by observational drawing, the book I'd recommend is Betty Edwards Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain. In order to draw, you must first learn to see, something humans are not particularly good at. What humans are good at is recognizing. No matter what style or mode you are going to work in this is essential. It's impossible to be an effective who artist or illustrator, who deals in representational images, without learning to see. From there, if your goal is illustration, you can move on to more specialized texts, though you will never give up on observational drawing any more than a musician gives up practicing scales or their method books. Trying to skip this step and working from a method that teaches nothing but a simple system or formula, like most "how to draw" books, will result in weak images and limited abilities. You will forever be doomed to copying other peoples ideas. Good books on human figure drawing/life drawing are: The books of George Bridgeman, there are several and then there is an omnibus volume that collects them, Bridgeman's Complete Guide To Drawing From Life. The Artists Complete Guide To Figure Drawing by Anthony Ryder. Figure Drawing For All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis. Figure Drawing Without A Model by Ron Tiner. (BTW, you cannot learn to draw the figure without a model. See below.) Good books on overall illustration techniques are: Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis. Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist by James Gurney. His website is a great place to visit. A good book on cartooning style is Animation by Preston Blair. This uses the old school Disney style, but the lessons it teaches are equally valid to more modern styles. For a book that talks about manga styles and modes give How To Draw Manga: Getting Started by Graphic-Sha. It's the only one of the millions of English language "how to draw manga" books I've found that was worth anything. It's main use is talking about technical issues not related to drawing. A very good English language book on writing manga is Shoujo Manga Techniques: Writing Stories by Mako Itsuki. The same series has a book on drawing, but I can't find my reference to it, and it is really about visual story planning. It will not teach you how to draw. (Found it, it's called Shoujo Manga Techniques: Drawing Basics, but again, it is not really about visual story planning.) For a really good book on dramatic writing for visual media I can highly recommend Story: Substance, Structure, Style and The Principles of Screenwriting by Robert McKee. Edit: I can't believe I left this out! Old age is creeping up on me. Listen carefully, this is important: FIND A LOCAL LIFE DRAWING CLASS THAT WORKS FROM A LIVE, PREFERABLY NUDE, MODEL!!!!! This is not really optional if you are serious. This can be tricky, and even be expensive. The small college town I currently live in has a local group that only charges $5 per 3 hour session. This is rare. Expect to pay $15-$25 per session in other venues. If you can't find a group, try and start one. Tough I know, but life isn't fair. Alternatives are to have family and friends model for you, good luck with that! You should also draw from clothed models, but that is usually easier to arrange. If you start your own group and can't find an instructor, there are a number of artist forums, often centered on the gaming and special effects industries, that you can post your drawings for feedback. Expect to be discouraged and for the criticism to be harsh. Try and use that as a motivation for working harder. Edit the 2nd: DRAW A LOT! Disney animator Ward Kimball used to say the first hundred thousand drawings are the hardest. Cartoonist Dave Breger used to recommend that beginning artists do at least 100 quick sketches a day. One of the sad realities is that we've all got a lot of crappy drawings inside us. Best to get them out as quick as possible. Don't be discouraged by crappy drawings. Everyone makes them. By doing lots of drawings, you build up a hand/eye facility that, coupled with your learning to see, makes the basics of drawing a non-thinking process, so your brain can concentrate on staging, form, value, etc. Do lots of gesture drawings, do lots of contour drawings.
