r/containergardening on Reddit: Good Annuals for Small Containers?
February 16, 2024 -
Hello,
I'm looking for some annual flowers, herbs, or veg that will do well in small containers, specifically shallow long window boxes around 6" in depth and width, and small terra cotta around 8-10" in diameter and height. I'm bad at watering so these plants would preferably be somewhat drought tolerant.
Some options I thought of are pansies, alyssum, and maybe basil. I would appreciate any suggestions or tips. Thanks!

All of those would be fine but you can’t grow basil this time of year unless you’re in a warm climate or the southern hemisphere. Do you know what zone you are in? Snapdragons do well for me in zone 8 year round with minimal attention

Lettuces and spinach do really well in window boxes. If you’re bad at watering, I’d skip the 8-10” terra cotta pots. Small containers like these dry out too quickly, and need to be watered every day—sometimes twice a day—on hot summer days. Larger containers at least twice that size have more soil volume, and plants grown in them have a larger root zone and are much more resilient than plants grown in smaller pots. They’re much more forgiving of neglect and bounce back more quickly if left unwatered. 5, 7, and 10-gallon fabric pots are a much better option than terra cotta.

Once seed begins to set, flower production usually stops. A 45 degree angle will work. Planting them in this fashion will allow them to grow out over the edge of the pot creating the desired effect much sooner than if they are planted up right.
