One of the advantages of English is our large, mostly imported vocabulary. One of the disadvantages of English is our large, mostly imported vocabulary. You can always find the word your are looking for, but this also means that our secondary, or unimportant, vocabulary is larger than many language's primary lexica. Great means both big and beneficial. Beneficial meaning that you have gained more in some way. Brilliant means bright. The Sun in the sky is brilliant, but it also means smart. It can also mean beautiful. Its usage in some dialects is similar to German's use of schon or hel. marvellous means that it causes you to have deep admiration, or be filled with marvel, at something. Amazing means it strikes dumbness (to be unable to function properly) or to confuse Wonderful means it strikes you with wonder/marvel terrific means it causes you terror (used in a good way like wonder--technically, wonder is positive and awe is negative, historically) These meanings are all etymological. They more or less are used interchangeably and we often will choose what sounds best. Fabulous tends to refer to clothing, though. Many of our words literally will just mean the same thing. And they always have. That is just how it is. English is a Germanic language. Historically, Germanic languages were big about coming up with the most synonyms for something and also with alliteration. English traded alliteration for rhyming (eventually) and kept the obsession with synonyms.
