r/EnglishLearning on Reddit: When talking about duration, I see people apparently using the word "indefinitely" meaning "forever". Is this correct?
November 8, 2023 -
Doesn't "indefinitely" literally mean that the duration is indefinite, i.e., undefined? Therefore, "indefinitely" would in practice mean "for the time being" or "until further notice" when referring to duration?

Indefinitely sort of literally means “until further notice”, but it’s used in a way that says it will go until something makes it stop, which in most contexts means forever. So no, it has a different meaning than “for the time being”, and is indeed much closer to “forever”.

This is one of those weird cases where my intuition tells me that "indefinitely" means forever, but it doesn't. I really started to realize this during Covid when all the restaurants said, "We will be closed indefinitely." It didn't mean they were closed forever, but they had no idea when they would be open again. But "indefinitely" really does feel like it means "forever", even though I know it doesn't.
