It ultimately doesn't matter. Licensed models exist, and companies like OpenAI have shown us that they are pivoting towards licensed training data rather aggressively. Stock photo libraries, social media websites, even places like Stack Overflow are all fair game. These companies were already in the business of selling data one way or another and AI provides them with an additional revenue stream regardless of if they are training the models themselves or simply selling the right to. Making existing models illegal is already a longshot, making licensed models -- even ones like META's image generator which is merely trained on things posted to their platforms illegal is another animal entirely and a fight that will almost certainly be lost. Saying "You can't beat AI" is not just wishful thinking from the pro side. It's practically factual. Companies and even models like Stable Diffusion might fall but AI as we know it is here to stay. Some of them don't care about the artist, they're just hiding behind the AI hate/Ai concerns. Mainly the ones in Twitter and TikTok don't care, they have a record for bullying and harassing artists long before the ai stuff.

The biggest frustration I run into, as someone with some criticism of AI, are the fantasists that either literally think AI already produces better work than humans, or believe it will entirely replace artists/writers/songwriters over the next decade. It's just dumbfounding to hear other humans effectively shitting on the very idea of human ingenuity, as pointless, obsolete.. and a thing of the past. As if the entire goal of human creation is the soulless ambition of financial gain, and achieving an almost factory like efficiency. Outsourcing creativity is already a pretty dystopian concept, but actively desiring it because you have dreams of what? Being a director or artist, but never actually had the patience or time or muster to develop those skills and think AI can somehow bridge that gap? It's insulting to all the talented ppl and labor that went into all the media these individuals claim to love, and it speaks to a chasm of ignorance regarding HOW their favorite media is actually produced. On the flip side, you have reactionary artists/individuals who, unable to parse reality from fiction, have been convinced AI is stealing their work, and obliterating their dreams of becoming a working artist/writer etc.. Who, not unlike the pro crowd, are too emotionally worked-up to even articulate themselves, thus devolving into an attack stance. As they say, violence is the inability to articulate ones self, I think similarly is true of ad-hominem attacks. Though I think most criticism of AI comes from the rational pessimism most people feel towards their employers; who already know it takes no excuse for their jobs to be outsourced to a cheaper labor pool overseas or replaced with some form of automation. Those of pro-AI sentiment quickly have rebuttals like "this is the inevitable outcome of any new transformative technology, do you want to stop progress?", and yea it is inevitable in some ways.. but ideally we should live in a world of our making, for our benefit, the average working person.., not the ruling class.. there's no indication AI will be generally used for the average citizens benefit. How many years out are we from the social media revolution, and as far as society is concerned is arguably a worse outcome for all of us. Propaganda is MORE prevalent, everyone thinks they're an expert, ppl are easily swayed by disinformation, and we no longer experience a shared culture. Noone knows what's to come, but its absolutely naive to, before a transformative technology has even taken root within society, just assume it's going to be a net positive for us all.
