Part of the reason for the 2 star reviews are because it can be a bad charger for non-Apple devices. Its power profiles are: 5.2V/2.4A, 9V/3A, 20.2V/4.3A. The 5.2V is not USB PD and I believe outside of USB-C specs. And it is completely missing 15V, which also makes it out of spec. It has an unusual approach to handling eMarker verification. To go above 60W you need a cable that supports 5A. Such cables include an eMarker, which the charger checks for before advertising it can do more than 60W. Most chargers act like a 60W charger before the verification, then re-advertise their true power after. The Apple 87W acts as non-PD charger before it re-advertises. Only offering 5.2V/2.4 (12.5W). I have no doubt the build quality is great, as reported. But it was engineered with only Apple products in mind. It can fast charge newer iPhones and iPad Pros. And it'll power any of the Mac laptops. But it is known to cause crashes of the Nintendo Switch. And won't support the Switch's dock. It won't quickly recharge many 30-60W USB-C PD power banks. And it wouldn't power any 12V or 15V based laptop. Apple is a member of the USB-IF. They know better.

I got my hands on an FNB58 USB tester and played it with a bunch of PD chargers. In particular, I have this 87W Apple charger for MacBooks and the tester says it's PD 2.0 60W (20V 3A). So, I'm wondering:
Is it a problem with my tester? I don't have a different one to verify.
Does Apple uses some non standard protocol between their charger and MacBooks to get 87W? But why? PD 2.0 supports up to 100W, right?
Does that mean I am only able to get 60W out of the charger if I use it on a non-Apple device?

You're probably using a standard USB-C cable. Those only go to 60W (20V3A). You need a 100 or 240W cable.

The charger asks the cable what it will support. The Cable says 60 W. The charger then tells everything connected to the cable “hey, I can only provide 60 W”. Buy a better cable.
