December 13, 2023 - Pretty sure first gen will charge in this. I think I tried it too ... Smart move by Apple. They already make the product, this is just some extra packaging design and distribution logistics (both likely with heavy reuse). Presumably all certifications (it does have Bluetooth) are also reusable on the new sku. Also a perk for anyone who loses their case while wearing their AirPods and just wants a replacement case.
