Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple
Charging your device when it’s inside certain styles of cases may generate excess heat, which can affect battery capacity. If you notice that your device gets hot when you charge it, take it out of its case first. If you want to store your device long term, two key factors will affect the overall health of your battery: the environmental temperature and the percentage of charge on the battery when it’s powered down for storage.

PSA: iPhone batteries are only rated by Apple to stay above 80% health in the first 500 cycles
Unpopular opinion: Just use your phone without worrying about the battery health. The iPhone 12 battery lasts for most people easily a day. Even if the capacity is at 80% it lasts long enough for most people. If not, just spend the 80 (?) bucks on a battery replacement. More on reddit.com
iPhone Battery Health and rate of degradation.
Heat I think is the big difference. Wireless charging for example generates more heat and I've seen my iPhone's battery degrade this year faster than any previous year. Or, if you're using the phone for anything intensive that makes the SoC run hot (or using the phone in hot ambient temperatures), that could reduce battery life as well. Also the more you use the phone, the more frequently you charge it, the faster you'll accumulate wear and cycles. There's also just a battery lottery, some are better than others. More on reddit.com

iPhone Battery Draining Faster After iOS 26.2? Here's Why - CNET
2 days ago - "This is normal, as your device needs time to complete the setup process in the background, including indexing data and files for search, downloading new assets, and updating apps," Apple wrote in a support page. "Immediately after completing an update, particularly a major release, you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance."

Does Keeping Your Phone Plugged in All the Time Hurt Your Battery? Here's What Apple, Samsung and Google Say - CNET
4 days ago - When your phone is plugged in and running demanding apps, it produces heat that accelerates chemical wear inside the battery. If you are gaming, streaming or charging on a hot day, that extra warmth does far more harm than leaving the cable plugged in overnight. The Apple battery guide describes lithium-ion batteries as "consumable components" that naturally lose capacity over time.

iOS 26 is still giving iPhone owners battery life problems – here are the 5 best ways to fix it
5 days ago - The iPhone’s always-on display can be useful, but it’s also a drain on the battery, so if you can live without it then it’s worth considering switching it off. To disable this, head to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display, and toggle it off. ... You might miss it at first, but if you already have an Apple Watch then that’s a convenient way to view the time and notifications anyway, so having your phone’s screen always on doesn’t necessarily add much extra value – and can also strain its battery.

6 days ago - CNET lead writer Vanessa Hand Orellana found that, at least initially, Apple may be undercounting the battery performance, writing in her review, "With notifications turned on (heavy Slack-ing and texting), at least one 30- to 45-minute outdoor workout a day, a full night of sleep tracking and some mild flashlight use, I've consistently managed to squeeze between 27 and 32 hours per charge."
