Hey everyone,
So today on Reddit, I read a post where a guy said his boss dropped his iPhone and cracked the back glass. When people expressed sympathy, the guy shrugged it off. He mentioned it's no biggie because fixing it with AppleCare+ costs just $29.
This confused me. I initially thought that maybe AppleCare+ was being sold for $29 where he lives, perhaps due to a promotion like the ones Samsung occasionally offers, and that this plan included free repairs. However, in my area, AppleCare+ costs $200, and I was under the impression that it came with free repairs. To clarify, I directly asked him:
“Is the $29 just for AppleCare+ coverage, or is it an extra fee for the repair even if you have AppleCare+? Because a third-party shop here only charges $20 to fix a screen or back glass.”
He confirmed that the $29 is an additional charge on top of what he already paid for AppleCare+. That surprised me. I always thought AppleCare+, with its $200 price tag, would cover repairs at no extra cost. Turns out you pay $200 and then another $29 every time you need a glass repair, while a local shop will do it for $20 without any AppleCare+.
So, I'm wondering, what's the point of getting AppleCare+ if you're going to end up paying more for repairs than at a local shop?
What do you guys think?
AppleCare+, how essential is it?

I’m usually a regular subscriber of AppleCare because I’m terrified of damaging one of my apple products and having to pay full price for a new one.
Lately i’ve been thinking maybe I should only keep it on my phone and laptop - phone for theft purposes and laptop because it was rather expensive.
Do y’all keep AppleCare on all your devices or only big ticket items?
I don't know if it makes a difference, but just in case: I live in an European country. Recently I got an iPhone pro max and so far it's the most expensive phone I've had (I always had the regular models). I can still get Apple Care and that's why I'm asking you whether you have it, if it makes sense or in which cases you would recommend it. I have small kids at home, which I guess is a valid reason to consider it.
Bought my iphone16pro and I still have 11 days left to buy the AppleCare + Coverage. Idk. But do you guys also purchase it? Is it needed?
