Hi there, I am a master's student studying computer science in the United States. I would like to purchase a 14-inch MacBook Pro.
A new 14" M3 Macbook Pro with an 18 GB 512GB SSD will cost me $1959.94 (taxes included) when I use the student discount.
I also checked the Apple certified refurbished store, and the M2 Pro 16GB 512GB SSD 14" is available there for $1694.94 (taxes included).
With the refurbished, I save $265. But, as a student, I consider the product's longevity; that is, I do not have to pay more money for any flaws.
Should I get the refurbished model or the student discount model? Also, AppleCare+?
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: As suggested by everyone ordered the refurbished one.

They are in pristine condition, and pass all Hardware tests, and can be warranted the same as new with ONE small exception: If Dead-on-Arrival, they must be returned to the refurbished store -- they cannot be swapped for new at your local Apple Store.

Unfortunately, you cannot apply a student discount to refurbished Apple products. However, keep in mind that refurbished Apple products can be much cheaper than brand new devices.

Of course. Buying refurbished products directly from Apple is a good way to pay less, in my experience. When Apple refurbishes a product, the product is sent back to a service center where faulty or damaged parts - including parts with scratches or blemishes - are removed and replaced with brand-new parts. Then it undergoes a battery of low-level and high-level tests to ensure all parts function correctly. When you receive an Apple-refurbished product, it is virtually indistinguishable from a new product. It quite literally looks and smells new. And it comes with the same standard warranty and support as a new product. The only noticeable difference you will see when purchasing a refurbished product from Apple is that the packaging is plain rather than being the standard retail packaging, and of course the price is often significantly reduced compared to a new product. I’ve purchased Apple refurbished products for years and have been pleased with every single one. But other retailers do not use Apple’s process when they refurbish items. Each one is different. Some give you a product with scratches, blemishes, and even fingerprints on it. Some do little more than wipe the product with a rag and throw it back in the box. A few do component-level (soldering, etc) repairs that may or may not actually fix all of the problems. Many don’t even bother testing full device functionality after “repair” is done. And often there is no adjustment to the original manufacturer’s warranty, which means depending on the age of the device, you’re only going to get a partial warranty - assuming the warranty wasn’t invalidated by whoever “repaired” it before you got it. For this reason, I don’t recommend buying refurbished Apple products from anyone but Apple directly.

Hello! I am currently in the market for a 13 inch M2 and I was able to find one on Apple Certified Refurbished for $1100. However I also have the option to just buy it new for $1180, plus get a $150 apple gift card (have no real use for it though). I remember seeing that certified refurbished is pretty much new, plus i don’t really need an apple gift card.

i purchased my M2 air refurbished and would normally suggest that route, but if the price difference is only $80 more and includes a $150 gift card, that option is a no brainer imo. i know you say you don’t need the giftcard, but you can always save it for later, put it towards applecare+ (even if just for a year), some airpods, or other accessory you may find yourself needing or wanting down the line.

Everyone here saying that it’s dumb to buy a “used” MacBook is wrong. Refurbished MacBooks are thoroughly tested and have many parts replaced. Refurbished MacBooks also have a lower failure rate than new MacBooks. Id still recommend getting the new deal because of the gift card. I just wanted to clear the misconception of the refurbished
