Can someone explain the $150 “free” gift card thing?

Let me preface by saying I know this is supposed to happen, I just don’t understand why.
So I got the education discount back to school offer on a MacBook Air where they sent me a free $150 gift card 24 hours after my order was processed. I got the gift card and used the $150 towards an iPad to get that amount off. However, I noticed I was charged $150 in my bank account.
I’m just confused on how this is equivalent to any discount at all and how this is actually a free gift card if I’m getting charged. This is an exact quote from apple customer service: “The $150 is the charge for the Apple Gift Card that is part of the back to school promotion. You will be charged the original amount of the Apple Gift Card then applied a discount of $150 to the original price of the device you have purchased.”
I’m sure this makes sense, but my mind just can’t comprehend what it means. To me this reads as “we are giving you $150 off but also charging you $150 separately.” (Cancels out, no discount), which I’m sure is an incorrect interpretation.
Can someone please explain this to me like I’m a baby because I genuinely don’t understand how I saved money lol
Hi everyone,
I recently decided to switch from Android to iOS after hearing great things about the system, so I went ahead and bought an iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Shortly after, I received an email from [email protected] containing a code for a $500 Apple Gift Card. I've searched online but couldn't find any official info about whether this is part of a promotion or something else.
I asked a few friends who have been iPhone users for a long time, but none of them had heard of this either.
Does anyone know if there’s any risk in redeeming it? I know I might sound a bit paranoid, but we’re not talking about $10 or $50 — it’s $500 “given” to me out of nowhere, so I just want to be sure.
Any help or insights would be appreciated!
