Apple Music's standard plan is $10.99 a month, and they said they pay artists $0.01 per stream.
If you listen to just 37 songs a day, Apple will have to pay the artists you listened to $11.10 monthly, which is more than the $10.99 subscription cost.
The other subscription plans are even less profitable.
If a family of 3 is on Apple Music's family plan ($16.99 a month), it only takes 19 streams daily per person until Apple loses money.
And the $5.99/month student plan becomes unprofitable at just 20 streams a day.
So how is Apple Music profitable? Do they get their profit from somewhere else?

You know Apple Music is not where Apple makes their money, right? Like..they have SO much money from everything else, they can afford to lose a little bit. Also; they do SO many things with Apple Music..live shows (who do you think gets ticket sales from those?) exclusive deals with labels/artists… trust me..Apple is fine

Apple Music is a value add, and an enticement to get people to enter the ecosystem. You and I might listen to more than $10.99 worth of music per month, but I'd be willing to bet that there is a smaller percentage of AM customers like us

I just had this same situation. I realized I was paying monthly at 10.99 a month, and I decided to pull the trigger and get the annual subscription. The annual subscription starts when your monthy subscription date ends. For me, the "former" monthly plan renews every 27th of each month, therefore with me purchasing the annual plan it commences on the 27th of the month. It's dependent upon the cycle of your current monthly plan. To see your monthy plan set-up, go to settings/click your apple ID name/click subscriptions. however if you already enrolled in the annual plan, you need to do the following in order to see your old monthly plan billing period Open the App Store app. Tap the Sign-In button. or your photo at the top of the screen.
