I signed up for the student version of AM at launch when I was in my sophomore year of college. Graduated in 2016. Almost 7 years later I’m still paying the student price. About every 6 months it will ask me to update my student information to keep the pricing, I select “not now” and that’s it. Really thought they would’ve figured this out by now and charged me full price. Anyone else done this with success?
Device : Xperia 5 ii Android : android version 12 (Nov 2022) Apple music : version 4.9.2 Region : Indian (Asia)
Here's a back story, I recently bought IEM and I wanted to experience the best audio quality / use the potential of my IEM and my Xperia phone (which supports hires audio jack), after doing some research, I came to know only Apple music supports lossless audio. Since I'm a student I wanted to claim the student plan but, I don't own any ios / apple device. I searched how to get apple music on Android couldn’t get any answers. Getting individual plan was easy but during payment verification the app gets mad and displays loading screen forever.
Here's the step to get apple music student plan in android
-
first head on to unidays and active discount for apple music (you will be eligible for the student plan)
-
then get the trail version for one month / if you didn't get any free trail offer, buy it for one month (there's no any other option, I guess)
-
now you get to access apple music after one month of trial you head over to account > manage subscription > student plan (if you don't see student plan option, you can revisit unidays app and click on active discount again and check if you get that student plan option)
-
during payment option use only Google pay (India), any other UPI payment option doesn't work I tried.
-
after updating payment details, click on continue you'll redirect to Google play payment gateway and there you can choose other payment options like debit/credit card and complete the payment
TADA you got apple music student plan in android device
Some colleges and universities don’t deactivate your student email after you graduate.
YMMV
My daughter, 16, is an Apple user. She wants to get Apple music. She is in full time education but too young to be an undergraduate, so can't get the student plan. Does that mean she needs to pay a full individual subscription? I have an Android phone and don't want to switch to Apple and I use a Spotify free account as I listen to podcasts and not much music.
Sorry if this isnt the right subreddit, recently bought a pair of airpods and was thinking of signing up for Apple Music, but before buying the subscription I was wondering if theres any way to get the subscription for cheaper such as any discounts or promos? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Do I have to first start the individual subscription and then change to the student plan? Or is student plan not available worldwide?
I forgot my student login to keep my subscriptions going. How in the world do I find it?! It’s obviously different from my iCloud.
It’s one with “est.” (I graduated a couple of years ago, Apple Music won’t take my plan away until a couple of years more. They haven’t for my older friends). (I’ve already graduated from an overseas institution. They can’t help me. And if they do, it’s going to take forever to get back to me because it’s obviously not a priority).
TIA!
Hi there, so I'm.new to iPhone and I have my main email for my apple id. I have a student email.id like to use for apple music, apple tv, etc - is that possible?
Hello everyone!
As the title suggests, I am in my 4th year in my university and I wanted to remove my Apple Music Student subscription, not canceling, but actually remove the university email being connected to my icloud.
Is there any way I can do that?
Thank you, and I wish you a wonderful day!
With the recent pricing increase from Spotify and its numerous baffling UI changes, I looked for an alternative after using it for 2 straight years. My philosophy on the software I use is that I have no reason to switch unless they give me a reason to (either the software I'm with and/or the software I'm looking into switching to). I have an iPhone, iPad, a Mac, and AirPod Pros, which set me up pretty perfectly to try out Apple Music (titled "AM" for the rest of this post). To be clear, I still steal from the Spotify family plan from my parents, so I wasn't paying for Spotify before, but I'm paying for Apple Music now (and if I can convince them to switch I'll hop on their AM family plan if they get it).
So I used SongShift to transfer my 24 playlists, and after using AM for just a week, here's my thoughts:
Pros:
-
UI: I was sick and tired of Spotify CONSTANTLY changing things for the worse. AM's UI is sleek, fast, and easy to use. It's very pretty, especially the lyrics. (later sections below will overlap with this section)
-
Shuffle: This one's big for me. I long believed Spotify's shuffle didn't work properly. My suspicions were confirmed when I tried AM; the shuffle WORKS. Every. Single. Time. I had a song play from a playlist that I hadn't heard since I added it ONE YEAR AGO. No idea how that even happens.
-
Spotify's shuffle is more of a "mix." It just repeats what you usually play in that playlist. I'm assuming it does this on purpose, but I'm not sure.
-
-
Quality: I have good ears I guess? I can notice the difference, especially Lossless when I use my headphones and an aux cable on my Mac. The sound is more "full" and more detailed. To hear a big difference, in Les Gordon's Flirting With June, the percussion instruments are more detailed and sharp. It's just better on AM. Spotify's promised Lossless isn't coming anytime soon, they're not even a profitable company.
-
Your Library: On Spotify, I have 24 playlists, in order, and look, I'm lazy, and I don't like scrolling (also in the future I will have much more than 24 playlists). On AM I put everything in folders. Easier to find, easier to manage, easier to see. Also, I can have more than 10k songs (the limit on Spotify). Few reach his number, but you never know. (also why have a limit in the first place?)
-
I'm not on social media: Spotify feels like a social media app to me. It's playful, it's fun, it's colourful, it's loud. AM isn't all that. It has colour and vibrancy, but it doesn't shove random shit down my throat when I open it. It doesn't feel like I'm using AM, but just the app that has my music. I like that. It's calming.
Cons:
-
The Desktop App: This thing is just fine. It's okay. Badly laid out, slow, and outdated. But the app works and isn't glitchy, it just needs a refresh BADLY. Hoping for something better with WWDC 2024.
-
Queuing: Not sure how they got this wrong but here we are. You slide the song button to the right and it shows these two buttons:
-
Purple - "Playing Next": It means exactly what it says. It'll play that song next. So if I queue a song before I queue Modern Girl above, it'll play Modern Girl first even though I queue'd it after. So, the queue function is backwards. wtf?
-
Orange - "Playing Last": This puts this at the end of a queue, so it would work IF I DID ALREADY HAVE A PLAYLIST ON QUEUE. So this just puts it at the end of like 80 songs that are already in the queue. Useless to me.
-
Continuity: The way Spotify effortlessly syncs between devices is magical. Apple (with all their ecosystems and money and engineers) said nah that's not important. It's easier to switch between devices by a mile on Spotify and AM is way behind in this regard.
Neutral (so far):
-
The Algorithm: Spotify does an overall better job of showing me new music. It knows what I want, when I want it; it's very powerful. However, I've only been using AM for a week. Its "New Music Mix" is just as good as Spotify's "Discover Weekly," at least for now. Being recommended new music that I actually like is very important to me. Only time will tell I guess.
-
Stations: This is the best way of finding new music on AM. However, it's a bit strange. Instead of showing you all the songs on that station like Spotify does (almost in a playlist fashion), AM only shows you what song will play next. Not sure if I like this approach, however, there is the added benefit that unlimited music will play from that station, as opposed to a limited number on Spotify. I played just the station made for me for a whole day without playing anything else and aside from skipping a few songs that were really terrible it was pretty good!
The Bottom Line: I'll be testing AM for the next month or two, and we'll see how it fairs. If Spotify is even remotely better I'll switch back. However, I'm at odds with Spotify as a company overall. They killed their Car Thing and scammed their buyers, they don't pay their artists as well as other platforms, and they recently posted an article about how good they are to the environment! It was utter greenwashing.
They are yet to be a profitable company, which worries me. At a ~60B dollar valuation, they could potentially get bought out by a very large player (enter: Apple). Idk, I'm not an expert. I'm not saying Apple is better with all of their scammy tactics too, but these are all things to keep in mind. Whatever happens, I'll just choose which app allows me to enjoy music in the easiest way possible.
Thanks for reading my Ted Talk and have a great rest of your day :)
When I first joined Apple Music on November 2nd, I went for the Individual plan because I couldn’t get the Student membership to work. As a student, I wanted to save a few bucks, but switching plans turned into a massive headache.
On the Android app, every time I tried to switch to the Student plan, I got this error: "You could not be verified by UNiDAYS, contact UNiDAYS support." I reached out to UNiDAYS support, and they confirmed several times that my student status was verified. Despite this, the error didn’t go away. Frustrated, I contacted Apple Support, hoping for answers, but they were no help either.
After spending hours troubleshooting and getting nowhere, I found a post on Reddit that revealed the real issue: Apple Music had moved student verification from UNiDAYS to SheerID, but only on the iOS app. For Android, macOS, and even Windows users, UNiDAYS was still the verification method, despite no longer working. Apple had made this change without notifying users, leaving non-iOS users stuck in limbo.
With no other option, I stuck with the Individual plan and shelled out more money than I should have. But I wasn’t ready to give up yet. A few days later, I tried again using someone’s MacBook Air (M1), and—finally—it worked. All I had to do was open the App Store, go to the "Manage Subscriptions" page, and click on the Student membership option. That was it. No errors, no drama, it switched instantly.
This seamless experience on macOS made me wonder: why is it so hard on Android or even iOS? Why was I given illogical errors and left to figure out Apple’s internal changes on my own? And don’t get me started on the Windows Apple Music app, it’s completely unusable. After a recent update, it just shows a black screen when trying to access "Manage Subscriptions."
Apple Music’s Lossless audio is phenomenal, but this level of inconsistency and poor user experience is unacceptable. If Apple can make switching so simple on macOS, why is it such a disaster on other platforms?
Apple, please fix your apps. No one should have to jump through this many hoops to access something as basic as a subscription plan.
I was using apple music trial on android and it showed me that I'll have apple tv also which I quiet enjoyed but now when I'm about to renew it ,it doesn't show the apple tv part earlier it said apple tv is also included when I was starting the trial. Is it only for the trial period or it is included but not written now. I'm from INDIA if it helps to answer the question
Which one should I use? Yes, I’m a broke college student
Hi everyone,
I have been using Apple Music since getting a free trial in September 2018 when I first started university. I graduate over a year ago but get to keep my email as it is one of the benefits for alumni. I have been able to verify my student status a few months ago but curious as to how long this can go on for?
I have no complaints though as paying 5.99CAD plus tax for both Music and Apple TV is a sick deal.
It's like a loop can anyone suggest me what shall I do
