just wanted to know if the pencil alone is a big upgrade cuz I'm getting an iPad air, just don't know if the pencil makes it worth getting the m2 rather than the m1. The price diff between the two is like 100 usd, and the pencil pro is 40 usd more (in my country)

thanks!

P.S; ik the camera position is different too, but that isn't really a deciding factor, maybe just a nice add on if I get the m2 imo

Jumping on one year later. I had a similar debate about upgrading my Gen 4 iPad Air, which I use for a lot of things, including art. In my case, I was debating between grabbing the new M3 (which would require me to get a new Apple Pencil Pro), or buying a refurbished M1. I ended up going with the M3 because it was on sale AND i really wanted a 13-inch model for when I'm drawing or reading graphic novels. For anyone who is wondering, the new pencil is "nice" but not necessarily a huge upgrade. I do like the squeeze function, which I think works much better than the double-tap from the Pencil 2. I also like the ability to do the barrel roll with my pen, which helps with certain brushes. For anyone deciding on a new iPad today, I would suggest you think about what you plan to use the iPad for. The M3 processor is better than the M1 but perhaps not to an extent that might make a big difference. The Apple Pencil Pro has some nice extra features for drawing AND it's nice to have the option for a larger screen which you can't get with the M1 iPads. So, all in all, upgrading to an M2 or M3 iPad is worth it for certain people. Now, if you are debating between base iPad (11 inch) or an iPad Air 11 inch, I would suggest you still go for the iPad Air if Art or hardware is important to you. The base iPad is stuck with the Apple Pencil USB C which is much more limited for the purpose of digital art. It lacks pressure sensitivity, wireless charging, squeeze, roll, and haptic feedback. The base iPad also has 6GB of RAM instead of 8GB, which does make a difference in Art programs. The Apple Pencil USB C is WORSE than the Apple Pencil 2 in some important ways. I can't really speak to the difference you will see in the M3 chip compared to the A16. The M3 is much better on paper but I'm not sure how much of that translates to the apps (I've heard it makes a difference for some 3D workflows and games but I haven't compared them myself). The bottom line is that, if you care about digital art, an iPad Air (M2 or M3), it may be worth the extra money if you have it. You can still make lovely art on a base iPad but you are missing out in certain areas that are important to artists (and possibly gamers). P.S. Also, someone is going to claim that the iPad Pro is better for art thanks to the 120hz screen. This is WRONG. 120hz can be nice for games but it doens't do a whole lot for drawing. You will notice that even Professional Pen Displays that cost thousands are still only 60hz. The tech community keeps pretending that 120hz is somehow revolutionary for art but actual professionals know that's simply not true.

hey! I wanted to ask the difference between the pro pencil and 2nd gen in terms of how convenient they are. I know the pro has a shit ton more features and overall a lot more features, I'm just really scared the barrel roll and stuff could become overkill and too much. So is it acc much better or no? For context, I am planning to do a lot of art

ipad wise, if I got the 2nd gen pencil I'm getting a pro 4th gen and if I got the pro pencil, I'd get ipas air m2. The price difference doesn't matter too much to me

But if all the new fearures are usable on the ipad id love to get the 3 !

So i was wondering if i should by ipad air 4 or the new ipad air 6 and it all comes down to the apple pencil. Just how much QoL of change is rhe new apple pencil pro compared to apple pencil 2, i found ipad air bundle for 500 bucks while apple pencil pro + ipad air 6 would cost me around 800 bucks. Is the upgrade worth 300 usd?

I'd imagine the squeeze and haptics would be convenient but wouldn't fundamentally affect the drawing/painting experience (and obviously Find My is nice to have but has no effect on regular usage). So it's down to whether the rotation support would be worth it to you or if tilt and pressure are sufficient. Oh, and hover though you could look into a refurbished M2 Pro maybe if you need that. Of course the 6th gen vs 4th gen also has the advantage of the M2, which means more performance cores, faster cores (equivalent to A15 vs the A14 in the 4th gen), higher clock speeds, bigger GPU, and double the RAM, so it will probably be supported at least a couple of years longer. Also supports Stage Manager/proper external extended display support if that's useful.

How big of a canvas you will use? How many layers? Will you use the animation feature? Take those into consideration because more RAM in this case will matter. I'm not saying ipad air 4 ram is not enough, from time to time i get "not enough ram" notif from csp. It's still works, but i notice it eats up storage used more than when i don't get that notifs. I switch to procreate because of this. Ram is still the main issue for bigger canvas or more layers, but i dont get that sudden increase in storage used with procreate. As for apple pencil 2 vs pencil pro, I can't say much about this because I haven't tried pencil pro. But pencil 2 is great already. Look up "dungeon meshi opening animation by trigger studio" on youtube. A lot of staffs use ipad pro and apple pencil 2.

Hey y’all. I have an M2 11 inch iPad Air. I’ve had it for a month now and really love it. I did not buy an Apple Pencil with it because I haven’t needed one. That’s changed as of this month as I’ve got various trainings coming up for work and will be needing to take notes.

I don’t draw or sketch, the pencil would mainly be used for note taking. I do like the convenience of the wireless charging on the pro but the rest of the features don’t really matter to me. Those of you that decided between these 2 pencils is the USB C pencil enough for note taking or is the pro worth the extra cost?

Can someone explain to me exactly the difference between the Apple Pencil 2 and the Apple Pencil Pro is?

I’m talking specifications. Is there a specific chip that is preventing compatibility with the 2024 iPads? I want to understand exactly why the Pencil 2 is not compatible with the any of the 2024 iPad devices.

The reason I ask is because the Pencil USB-C and Pencil 2 have a lot of over lap but the USB-C model lacks some features of the Pencil 2. I see it as a stripped down version of the Pencil 2, however the USB-C is compatible with the newer devices, where the Pencil 2 is not.

Hello, I've recently bought an M1 iPad Pro and been looking for a new apple pencil as I'm upgrading from a 9th gen base iPad with the 1st gen Apple Pencil which will obviously not work with my new iPad. However, I discovered that Apple stills sells them for £129 on their website, despite already having the Apple Pencil Pro out for the same price (at least in the UK), whilst eBay sellers are listing them for about £60 - £70. Do you think I should take the risk and buy it off of eBay or should I get it straight from the source. Thanks.

My friend just got an iPad mini 6th gen and I’m wondering which Apple Pencil would be best suited for that model.

From my understanding the 2 has more functionality over the USB-C Pencil, but I don’t know whether those certain functions are worth it due to limitations I am not considering when using the iPad model she has vs something like an Pad Pro model.

Any advice for which to get and why?

I currently have the iPad Pro 10.5" with G1 Apple Pencil and was deeply considering upgrading to the 11" (Maybe 12.3) with the new pencil. I'm curious, for those that have felt the comparison, how is the performance of the new apple pencil? Do you notice it writing more precisely? I know there's obviously the weight difference as well as being able to charge on the side of the iPad but I was curious if there was anything more significant than that?

I'm an iPad Air 4 (4th generation) user with an Apple Pencil 2. You can probably guess where this is going... Basically, I got really sad after the recent Apple announcements.

Having Apple products always feels like a ticking bomb for me. Living in Brazil, we miss out on some conveniences most Apple users have: no refurbished store, limited AppleCare (no accidental damage coverage), and significantly higher prices.

Our best option is selling devices on second-hand markets, often at 50% or less of what we paid. So, every launch becomes a "should I upgrade now and sell my current iPad before it becomes obsolete?" dilemma. This obsolescence thing is terrible, especially considering how durable Apple products are. My husband owns an iPad 2nd gen and a 2012 Macbook which have been unusable for a while.

The previous iPad mini and Air 5 releases, less than a year after I got mine, showcased features like Stage Manager and external monitor support that already weren’t available for me. But being just one generation behind, upgrading for a similar experience didn't make sense.

Back when I bought my iPad Air 4, which was my first ever iPad, I had decided to splurge on an Apple Pencil 2 alongside it. It was expensive, but it offered great functionality for a translator/academic like me. I figured, with Apple offering the same mouse and keyboard for Macs for years, the Pencil would be a safe purchase. Boy, was I wrong. In hindsight, a third-party option like an ESR pen might have been better.

So, regarding the new iPads. Upgrading to the new Air would mean selling my current Pencil for only 30% of its original price (since it would just become a white stick to poke things with). That wouldn't be enough money for me to afford both the new iPad and the new Pencil Pro (with a long-term value that we can’t count on). Essentially, I'd be trading an iPad + Pencil for just an iPad with some Aliexpress pencil, which means losing functionalities I currently have.

Sticking with my current setup isn't ideal either. My iPad works fine, and Stage Manager isn't a dealbreaker. But the resale value keeps dropping, and with each new generation, software updates and compatibility might become an issue, rendering it unusable like my husband's devices. Plus, there's the whole AI stuff to come shortly, and it’s likely limited to M1 or M2 products (or even M4). By June, my iPad could already feel like a relic.

Yes, this might seem like catastrophizing. But it's coming from a genuine Apple fan who prefers it a lot more over Windows/Android. However, my budget allows for one or two mid-range product upgrade every year, so each purchase needs strategic planning.

I’ve been asking myself what to do.

Realistically, waiting another generation or six months might be wise. Maybe Apple will make it possible for the gen 2 Pencil to pair with the new iPad air (and then I can get a magnetic charger or something), or offer a trade-in program for the Pencil 2 (wishful thinking, I know), but even then, such programs might not become available in Brazil.

Anyways, this was more of a rant than me asking questions. I’ve been feeling quite sad lately, because any choice (keep it? upgrade it?) would be a net negative, from what I have concluded, anyways. All because of this freaking pencil incompatibility.

I currently own an iPad 8th Generation (32GB), but I need to buy a new iPad with more storage. I use my iPad to take notes and do a lot of sketches for school (architecture student). I am torn between purchasing the new iPad (128GB) that’s coming out next week with the Apple Pencil (USB-C) or a renewed 2020 iPad Air 4th Generation (64GB) with the Apple Pencil Pro. The price ends up being around the same, but with the new iPad I can’t use the Apple Pencil Pro but I’d get more storage. With the iPad Air, although I can use the Pencil Pro, it’s older and has less storage. Is the Apple Pencil Pro worth it, more specifically the wireless charging? Or should I just get the new iPad and stick with the regular Apple Pencil?

EDIT: I meant Apple Pencil 2nd Generation, not Apple Pencil Pro 🫠
