Using that device might cancel account recovery. To avoid delays, turn off other devices that are signed in with your Apple ID until account recovery is complete. When the wait period is over, Apple sends you a text or automated phone call with instructions to regain access to your account. Follow the instructions to immediately regain access to your Apple ID.” In your scenario, I don’t know how a thief could do the recovery process without you knowing. Account recovery contact security - Apple Support
To set up an Account Recovery Contact, the user’s device communicates with Apple servers to upload the share of the keying information Apple will hold (the AES key mentioned above). It then establishes an end-to-end encrypted CloudKit container with the recovery contact to share the portion the recovery contact needs (the Recovery Contact Packet encrypted using the AES key).

r/iCloud on Reddit: Is having a “Recovery Contact” actually bad for security?
December 17, 2022 -

If my recovery contact has an easy-to-guess passcode and their phone gets stolen, and the thief is able to guess the passcode, couldn’t the bad actor just…

  1. See that the phone belonged to my recovery contact

  2. Initiate account recovery on my behalf on a different device

  3. Get a recovery code from my recovery contact’s phone

  4. Use it to gain access to my iCloud?

I need to set it up in order to use Advanced Data Protection, but fear it just widens the attack surface and lowers my security level to as bad or worse than my security contact’s.
