What annoys me about this is how Apple tries to maintain this image of being "eco-friendly" and "sustainable" and yet does everything within their power to make sure their devices aren't repairable and will end up in a landfill as soon as possible. I know marketing is obviously not meant to be honest, but somehow people keep repeating Apple's BS excuses and defending their blatant attempts at cutting costs and screwing consumers in a way that no other company could ever hope to get away with. Apple stores have most parts on hand, and same with replacements. If needed part orders take a couple days to arrive (customer phones are not held during this situation). Replacements are often in stock, same process for the order if out of stock. The repairs in an Apple Store are typically completed fully in under 70 minutes (depending on repair and store). Most stores have same day appointment availability depending on time of day with walkin appointments (book a heads may show full but walkins are still available with a wait) Apple phone support can try and book only book ahead appointments, and cannot see inventory levels in stores or reserve parts as everything is first come first serve from appointments to parts and service timing On rare occasions Apple Stores send devices to a depot facility (common with Mac’s rare with phones) due to part availability or engineering requests/discrepencies The appointment system is set up to allow both book ahead and walkin appointments and it takes into account the amount of scheduled technicians who are certified to take the appointment and the repair system schedules the repairs depending on how many technicians are scheduled to complete repairs during that time. Ex-Genius here (though that was 10+ years ago and things may have changed). The repairs aren't the same. Go for the second one. What's different is how the staff evaluated the damage and whether the repair will be done in-house at the Apple Store or sent out for a depot repair. In the first one you have a tier 1 accidental damage repair. The machine will be repaired in-store. They'll replace the display and give it back to you. If other components were damaged besides the display then you will have to pay for those separately. The second one evaluates the damage as more serious (tier 2). This means that the Genius who helped you estimated that besides the display there could be other components damaged, so he'll send the machine for a depot repair. There they do a more comprehensive check of the components in the machine, and if other components were damaged then they will replace them too for the flat rate that they quoted. In-store repair is faster, but depot repair is more comprehensive. Choose the second one. Better safe than sorry. More on reddit.com
